An Owl Song
Canned Heat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What would you think of me?
What would you think of me?
If I told you that I loved you
Wanna know what would you think of me?

I wanna thank you, faro
Just for what you promised me
I wanna thank you, faro
Just for what you promised me
You know I trust you, faro
When I tell the world I do

You are a money-takin' woman
But you know that's alright with me
You are a money-takin' woman
But that's alright with me
'Cause you're the one, baby
Been rollin' 'cross my mind

I can tell you all my troubles
'Cause I know that won't bother you
I can tell you all my troubles
'Cause I know that won't bother you
If I told you that I loved you
Wanna know, what would you think of me?

What would you think of me?
What would you think of me?
What would you think of me?
What would you think of me?

I'm gonna tell you that I love you
And maybe then we'll see

Overall Meaning

The Canned Heat's song An Owl Song is a love song that delves into the question of what someone would think of the singer if he or she told him or her "I love you." Throughout the song, the singer is assuring his or her beloved partner, Faro, of his or her trust and gratitude towards him or her. The song opens with the line "What would you think of me?" and is repeated several times throughout the song, with the singer expressing his or her desire to know Faro's thoughts on their love. Despite Faro being a "money-takin' woman," the singer is fine with it and reiterates that Faro is the one he or she wants. The song ends with the singer finally declaring love and hoping that their confession will lead to a positive outcome.

Great recording! Thanks for uploading..

I have the first few albums on Vinyl from new in 69 onwards..

Now, many years later in this digital age, and having bought the same album or tracks on iTunes, I think the nearest sounding version to this YouTube version is the one on the "Uncanned! The best of Canned Heat" version....
The balance on this particular track (itunes 2:45) favours the harmonica, whereas (surprisingly), on 'Boogie with Canned Heat', (itunes 2:44 or 2:49) the harmonica is not 'as forward' in the production/mix/mastering, but the recording does sound very smooth, silky and really lets the brass section sound cut through and really shine !

I found a similar issue (but worse) in the pre digital days...
I was looking out for a second copy of 'Boogie With Canned Heat' (vinyl on Liberty) which I got in 'new 69 and was already showing sign of use (clicks etc)..
I found a copy released on an LP on a French label (SACEM and LIBERTY). The recording is low level and just has lost that 'something' - so that even playing it back on good hifi stuff simply just does NOT rock.
I think I have listened to that particular pressing twice in all the years since.

A friend of mine recently turned me onto Blind Owl & now I'm obsessed! He was a genius, just brilliant. I can't believe I've been a musician all my life & am only now learning about him. Allan Wilson seriously deserves more recognition & exposure....

I simply love Blind Owl Alan Wilson. I just wish he was still around; such an untimely death in 1970, from barbiturate poisoning. He'll always be my favorite blues singer. What a voice!!!!

I've loved this song for almost 50 years now. Alan was truly phenomenal. May he live forever. (Saw them at Miami Pop in Dec '68)

I have what looks like a coffee can that came from Canned Heat's Eurpoean tour. It has a wrapping around it with the names of the cities they played in, and pictures. There is a label on it - I can't remember exactly what it says, but something to the effect that all the ingredients for a good time are in this can. I would be glad to send anyone a picture of the can. Does anyone have any idea as to what may have been in that can?

the best !!!

It is a crying shame that the harmonics on vinyl don't come th ough on this tune.  This is the best harmonics I have EVER heard recorded.  Puts a chill down your spine!  Get the vinyl!!
