Catfish Blues
Canned Heat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I I wished I was a catfish
Swimming deep down in that deep blue sea
I'd have all these women fishing
'Sho nuff after me
After me

Well I'm going
Yes I'm goin'
And I won't be back no more
Tell you darling
Don't live here no more
Here no more

Yes I'm goin' now
I've been knocked out all night
I'm drunk,I don't know what I'm doin'
But I do feel like (?)

Now you're gonna know too
Let's take it back to the country now

There's a house over yonder
Where the (?) is painted green

Well there's a lot of fine women
Sho' nuff I ever seen

Overall Meaning

The song "Catfish Blues" by Canned Heat is a blues song that features a strong desire for freedom and a life free of trouble. The lyrics are about wanting to be a catfish, swimming deep down in the blue sea and having all these women fishing for you. This shows the desire to be free, to be one with nature, and to have the attention of the opposite sex. The idea of being a catfish could also be symbolic of being hidden, away from the troubles of the world.

The repeated lines "I'm goin', and I won't be back no more, tell you darling, don't live here no more" show a strong desire to leave everything behind and start afresh. This is a common theme in life when things become too difficult, and one needs to escape to find peace. The lyrics "I've been knocked out all night, I'm drunk, I don't know what I'm doing, but I do feel like (?)" shows the singer's aimlessness, but at the same time, there is a sense of direction, an urge to escape and leave everything behind.

Absolutely the best blues-rock band from LA, hands down. Gritty as hell! I got to see them live many, many times in the sixties!!

Haven't heard this long track in 40 years! It was one of my favorites and I could sing bits of Henry Vestine's guitar solo. That guy was right up there with Clapton and Bloomfield. This band combines electric and delta blues elements better than anyone I can think of other than Muddy Waters, who obviously influenced them. This is from their first album titled 'Canned Heat' and it is hard to find. My copy was lost in a fire.

vestine had an original clever string bend and riff that I has not heard elsewhere in 1967 -- of course things have changed - but treasure the original memories - simplicity and clean sound intensity - and blind owl rhythm terrific
