Christmas Blues
Canned Heat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well it's christmastime everybody
But it's raining in my heart
Yes it's christmastime everybody
But it's raining in my heart
Well you know that i love you baby
Tell me why must we be apart

Well you told me new year's eve
That we'd be together christmastime
Well you told me new year's eve
That we'd be together at christmastime
Well it's christmas eve my darling
Will you be here when the bell
Begins to chime

Okay

What is a ship without a cre-ew
What is the morning without the de-ew baby
What's a ship without a cre-ew
What is the morning without the de-ew baby
What is my life little darling

Another lonely christmas
Without you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Canned Heat's Christmas Blues convey the emotions of a person who is feeling downhearted and lonely despite the festive season when everyone is supposed to be jolly and happy. The lyrics are a reflection of the holiday blues that many people face when they are separated from the ones they love or when they feel like they are not living up to the expectations set by the season. The first verse encapsulates the overall sentiment of the song quite well. The singer acknowledges the festive period that they are in, but also feels that their heart is filled with sadness despite it. They then ask why they must be apart from their loved one, which shows that the source of their sadness is missing someone close to them.

The second verse reveals that the singer had promised to be together with their loved one during the Christmas period, but they are not sure if that promise will be kept. They express their hope and anticipation that the person they love will come through and be with them on Christmas Eve when the bell chimes. In the final verse, the singer laments the fact that their life will be incomplete without that special person, and the festive season holds no meaning without them. The line "What is my life little darling, another lonely Christmas without you" conveys the depth of the singer's feelings of sadness and desperation.

Overall, the lyrics of Christmas Blues are an expression of the melancholy that people experience during the holiday season when they cannot be with the people they love or when they feel like they are missing out on the joy and festivities.

This is classic blues...so smooth and deep. Alan and Bob were genius's. Rest their souls.

With Dr John on piano...bonus to a super jam

@charlesbaker960

Have always loved this band. Their music often defines the state of my heart. But even if you have the Blues, this is that time of year for peaceful contemplation and love of family and friends. Merry Christmas everyone.

The incomparable, irreplaceable Alan Wilson on harp.

r. i p. Blind Owl. Bear, and Sunflower--all gone too soon

@Chuckyarla

Al Wilson was Canned Heat. It was a sin to lose him.They were still a great band but the heart had been removed.

Fito by now he'd know just how much this dysfunctional group are loved. The harmonica playing is exquisite at all times, Blind owl & Bob Hite really knew how to simply 'scorch the tune with tone'. The Drumming was always superior, piano on this by Dr John the best. The songs aren't always played to be the 'popest' but it seems a good blues blow is where it's at...'Expression' is where the 'real' blues is made. Coming together. Thanks for putting this one up.

@harriware
