Future Blues
Canned Heat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who'll tell your future, I can't tell my past,
Who'll tell your future, I can't tell my past,
Seem like every minute lord is sure gonna be my last,
Gonna who do ya baby, got you on my mind,
Who do ya baby, got you on my mind,
Wait a few months darlin' it will drive you right outta your mind,
'Cause your a crazy little mama and you know you can't be beat,
I got somethin' for ya baby that is awful sweet,
Come on little mama gonna knock ya right off your feet.

See that picture baby hangin' up on your mama's shelf,
See that picture baby hangin' up on your mama's shelf,
I'm gettin' tired, tired, tired lord of sleepin' all by myself,
Who'll tell your future, I can't tell my past,
Who'll tell your future, I can't tell my past,
Seem like every minute lord is sure gonna be my last,
Tho the past was sour lord the future can be mighty sweet,

We finally found a home and our love just can't be beat,
You know it's forever and I'm never never gonna leave.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Canned Heat’s song “Future Blues” are reflective of the artist’s current state of mind, where the future is uncertain and the past is something he cannot rectify. The opening line “Who'll tell your future, I can't tell my past” suggests that the singer is unable to predict what the future holds while simultaneously struggling to come to terms with their past. The lyrics further describe the feeling of constant apprehension that every minute seems to be the last one, which reflects the singer's anxiety about the future.

The singer confesses that they can't stop thinking about their significant other, and the pain of their absence will eventually lead to madness. “Cause your a crazy little mama and you know you can't be beat, I got somethin' for ya baby that is awful sweet, Come on little mama gonna knock ya right off your feet” suggests that he wants to be with this person as quickly as possible to alleviate the separation anxiety.

The lyrics take a positive turn when the singer suggests that he has finally found a home with his lover, and their love is unconditional. “Tho the past was sour lord the future can be mighty sweet, We finally found a home, and our love just can't be beat, You know it's forever and I'm never, never gonna leave.” This part of the lyrics paints a brighter picture of the future, where the singer has finally found stability and an unbreakable bond.

The early line-ups,including the
formative years and the so-called
"classic line-ups",should have made
this band more highly revered and
mentioned along with the other great
groups from that era.
Bob Hite and other harmonicist led
bands like James Cotton,Corky Siegel,
Paul Butterfield,and Charlie Musselwhite
were all there from the beginning of the
creation of the early 1960's
BluesRock scene.
This group was at the top of the heap.
John Lee Hooker with CANNED HEAT
is one of the best Rock albums,period.
And I thought I had read somewhere
that CANNED HEAT was the favorite
group to go see for Jim Morrison.
The film here is beautiful.It does seem
to be a rehearsal,by their playful mood
before they get down to business.
Beat-Club is for me the most remarkable
Rock Music site there is,hands down.

One of the most underrated bands of the 60ies & 70ies; just great, timeless music !

@gogoyubari366

What makes you believe they're underrated? Please explain.

@josebarragan6627

Not underrated at all watch the Beatles new documentary where Paul plays one of there songs

@namcat53

You're using a term that is meaningless. It's used by someone usually far too young and completely unaware of music history and refers to something they just heard for the first time last week that's been very well regarded by critics, fans and fellow musicians since 1966.

@neilthompson5748

Underrated? - they were a very popular band with hit records

Bob “The Bear” Hite (February 26, 1943 – April 5, 1981), aged 38
Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson (July 4, 1943 – September 3, 1970), aged 27
Henry “The Sunflower” Vestine (December 25, 1944 – October 20, 1997), aged 52
You will be remembered as legends.

@robertzemko6590

Well done, Yes Harvey Mandel (Vestine's replacement) and drummer Aldofo de la parra are the only one's still alive. De La Parra will be 76 on Feb 8 and Mandel turns 77 on March 11. Grew up listening to this band as Dad had the Hallelujah album in late 69 when I was a kid.

@lilajagears8317

Damn, most except maybe Vestine would be in there 80s now. Along with Hendrix, Joplin Etc.. Jimmy Page will be 80 this Dec, Jagger just turned 80 (I could keep going but it's just a statement).
