London Blues
Canned Heat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I came here last year
You promised much to me
When I came here last year
You promised much to me
You lead me on and teased me
You picked me up and let me down

When I asked you here for dinner
And you brought all your friends
When I asked you here for dinner
And you brought all your friends
I said here I am feeding half of London
And all I should be feeding here is you

Well I took you to the music show
And we wound up in your home
Well I took you to the music show
And we wound up in your home
But you ran away and hid from me
Left me walking the streets (of London) all alone

Now you call me on the telephone
There's a concert you wanna see
Now you call me on the telephone
There's a concert you wanna see
Cause the Heat's in your town
And your living right down the street
On your way to the concert

You want to stop by the hotel a while
If you don't stop by the hotel, you can go straight to hell

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Canned Heat’s “London Blues” are about a lover who promised a lot and delivered nothing. The lead singer talks about the time when he came to London last year and his lover promised so much to him but did not live up to the hype. The lover teased him, picked him up, and let him down. The singer is unhappy because he was treated badly, and the lover did not keep her promise. She invited her friends for dinner when he was expecting an intimate evening with her. The singer feels that he ended up feeding half of London when he should have been feeding only her.

The singer further recounts how he took his lover to a music show, and they ended up at her home. However, she ran away and left him walking the streets of London all alone. Later, she calls him on the telephone, wanting to go see a concert because Canned Heat is in town, and her living is right down the street. However, she requests that she stops by his hotel room first, and the singer responds that she can go straight to hell if she does not. The lyrics highlight the disappointment and feelings of distrust the singer holds towards the lover that promised everything but delivered nothing.

i could write a book... about this recording... of this song... because this recording of this song is just an incredibly awesome piece of work... all the musicians and others who worked on this, i hold in the highest regard... especially the Blind Owl... and THE SNAKE! THE SNAKE is otherworldly awesome on this one... Snake, IMHO, is one of the very top electric guitarists of all time, and this record is one of his best... and the balls The Blind Owl has, telling this story... about a woman who hurt him... telling her what he says in the very end of the song... Fito's book (a must read) tells the backstory here, it's fascinating... Fito is awesome on this tune, the sound of the snare, the way he sets up the guitar solo...Dr John is perfect... of course the Mole brings his super tasteful "blues plus riff" here... And the way the recording is mixed and mastered really works well... / HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEAR, SUPER LOVE FOR CANNED HEAT.

T Sellers - sadly, as you know, Blind Owl 🦉 had trouble hooking up with or knowing how to be in any kind of relationship with a woman. The others in the band would advise him to wash his hair and bathe regularly... plus he he was clueless to the point where he even had difficulty with prostitutes. It must have been excruciating for him... Not sure what were the sources of his insecurities in this area of his life. It’s sad also because being able to sing and play guitar usually attract women and then you add success to it... Bill Wyman is not necessarily better looking than Blind Owl was but he was the most successful of The Rolling Stones with the ladies... even more so than Mick Jagger.

Canned Heat Live In Europe 1970 is a blues jazz masterpiece totally swings-ville with a high art conceptual photo Pop art/ Surrealist "bent" oil tanker truck cover! Just brilliant work that still resonates decades later!

I remember Canned Heat playing in London 1971 (Royal Albert Hall). Great stuff! I managed to enter the show via a back door and a kind recording technician who let me pass. I was so happy to watch the show - still remember this event now at the age of 73!

Future Blues is a near perfect album. Blind Owl is at his peak. The Bear is strong! Harvey Mandell (filling in for Henry Vestine) is smoking. Not to slight The Mole and Fito of course - solid as granite. And there's so much variety on this album. It's all blues, for sure, but every song has a unique character.
