Canned Heat Lyrics

Well I'm rollin' and a tumblin' I've cried the whole night long
Oh well I'm rollin' and a tumblin' I've cried the whole night long
Oh well I hurt your feelin' baby, so this gone all wrong

Oh well I really love you baby, come on and say you'll be mine
Oh well I really love you baby, come on and say you'll be mine
Well if you don't like my tattoo's??? don't you drink my wine
Oh well I cried as my momma have cried the night before
Oh well I cried as my momma have cried the night before
Oh well I hurt your feelin' baby, you don't love me no more

Well in the river was whiskey I wasn't drive and drunk
Well in the river was whiskey I wasn't drive and drunk
Well I was whipped to the bottom baby I wouldn't come up

Oh well I'm rollin' and a tumblin' I've cried the whole night long

Oh well I'm rollin' and a tumblin' I've cried the whole night long
Oh well I hurt your feelin' baby, so this gone all wrong

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Canned Heat’s “Rollin’ And Tumblin’” are a bluesy confession of love and regret. The song begins with the singer, who is rolling and tumbling, crying the whole night long, suggesting that they are in emotional turmoil. The lyrics go on to reveal that the singer has hurt their lover’s feelings and feels that things have gone wrong between them. The singer implores their lover to say they will be theirs, but warns them not to judge them for their tattoos or drink their wine.

The next verse is particularly poignant as the singer reveals that they cried just as their mother did the night before, suggesting they may have inherited a tendency to hurt those they love. This verse also reveals that the singer’s lover no longer loves them, adding to their emotional pain. The final verse changes the scenery to a river of whiskey, perhaps indicating excessive drinking to numb their emotional turmoil. We learn that the singer was “whipped to the bottom,” suggesting they felt overwhelmed by their emotional pain and felt like they could not resurface.

Overall, the song conveys a sense of emotional turmoil, regret, and self-destructive tendencies. It is a raw and honest expression of the pain one feels when love goes wrong.

Almost 50 years ago and still sounds great. They were so young back then what a tragic loss Alan Wilson was to the music world. Great film.

Blind Owl looks like a kid that used to let me copy off his homework when I was in 9th grade!  That haircut and those glasses wouldn't let a person see his true persona as a FANTASTIC Blues Guitarsman.  Kind of like "Clark Kent" of Superman fame.  What a fantastic group of guys.  Canned Heat was one of the truly great bands with NO glitz or glammer.  They just went on stage and "Got It Done"!!
