I want to share a story about how I almost got scared to death in F.E.A.R. multiplayer. It was one of the creepiest moments I ever had in my life, but hilarious at the same time. I was playing the multiplayer A LOT back then, but unlike the singleplayer, it had no horror elements. No Alma, no jump scares, just some deathmatch modes, CTF, etc.

One night I wanted to play, but all the good servers in my region (EU) were already empty. So I hopped onto one, waiting for somebody to join while running around the map, practising movement etc. After 10 minutes or so, I had already given up hope for someone to join this late and got totally carried away with the movement exercices. Then suddenly, SHE appeared. At the end of a corridor. Just standing there, staring at me. Alma, the little girl in the red dress from the singleplayer campaign.

ALMA! ON AN EMPTY MULTIPLAYER SEVER, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT!

For a second, my heart stopped beating and i thought a had finally lost my mind. Playing Alma in multiplayer was Impossible and never heard of. Is this a dream, did I fall asleep on my keyboard? But then she came at me. Zooming down the corridor with like 500mph and ending my soldier's life with a single punch to the balls. I was paralyzed and my whole body was shaking. I took a moment to collect myself and hit tab, to see if another player had joined. And it was another player indeed, with default name tag. I wasn't crazy or dreaming, what i had encountered that night was the most sophisticated server hack the game has seen at this point. I then wrote this player in chat, that he got me good and how this is for once a funny and creative hack, not your average noclip aimbot godmode every cheater kiddie was running at the time. He replied by letting a ton of super weapon pick ups rain on my head, before he disappeared forever.

I've played a lot of horror games in my life (pretty much all the relevant ones I'd say), but nothing beats the feeling of isolation on an empty server late at night in a dark room before getting jumpscared by a hacking zombie girl in a red dress. If you are out there... good job bro! You shall play FEAR3 forever. In hell.

I always loved the first game, it was a decent blend of action and supernatural horror paired with surprisingly smart AI. The whole thing had this really unique atmosphere, you never felt as if everything was just "normal", there would always be a hint of something foreboding going on. I loved the story above all, slowly uncovering the secrets behind Alma Wade, how she was made, etc. Truly a masterful game.

Then came the sequel. I enjoyed it just as much, it felt like a step into the right direction. The world was bigger, it expanded upon the release of Alma Wade and had tons of great moments. Again, good action paired with horror, such variety everywhere, some memorable characters. However, most importantly, it continued the story in a meaningful way and left on a nasty cliffhanger that was begging for a third game. The one DLC we got, Reborn, just ignited those flames further.

And then came sigh the greatest disappointment ever. The third one. Bloody hell, it ruined everything. Do not get me wrong - the game was enjoyable in a way. However, the action and so on wasn't the only important thing. What about the story? A great story the first two games had spent such time to build... Completely wasted. Alma Wade lost all meaning, characters from the past serve little to no purpose, the ending makes no sense, etc. All that paired with COOP which was in my opinion entirely unnecessary. Naturally these are just claims which would take me too long to go into detail over here in the comments. Still, I stand by my point. The first two games build such an amazing world, such a great story - and it all came apart with the third game. Everything felt thrown together, the few decent elements of it a dim light among chaos. I played it, finished it and felt so disappointed. I felt the same way with Dead Space. Another flawed trilogy, two good games followed by a disaster of a third one that completely lost sight of what made its predecessors so good. It is just such a big shame.

These days I look back at FEAR 1 and 2, remembering them as such awesome games, just like with Dead Space 1 and 2, and how such great potential was ultimately squandered. Rest in peace.

First Last

I worked on FEAR Online as a graphic artist, mainly for the marketing, but I also created all of the Steam trading cards, icons, profile backgrounds, etc. I was responsible for the majority of marketing assets made for the game. However, it was all pretty rushed and more of a side project, I often worked on 3 or 4 games at a time, and FO was low on the list of priorities. I can honestly say that it wasnt handled like a true FEAR game.

I should add that while the game was disappointing, to say the least, I am still proud of the work I did, and I did my best to make the experience better where I could.

EDIT:
I've made plenty of additional comments below.

EDIT 2:
It doesn't matter if you believe me or not.

I'm not linking to any of my portfolios or anything like that, because people around here can be terrible, and I don't want to be spammed or "defamed" on my professional platforms. I also don't want want to use this account as a way to advertise myself. I don't even know if I'm legally allowed to say what I've said, as I've signed an NDA years ago, so I don't want to get in trouble because of that.

If you really wanted to, I'm sure you could do some digging and find proof.

Good job on the video. I really enjoy listening to them. I quite liked FEAR, and the two dlc. It had a slightly creepy vibe at times. You know [can guess] Alma is going to be behind you, as you turn to descend the ladder, but you still get a slight shiver/tingle down your spine. You smile, and say “hello, Alma”. The nonsense with elevators started getting old (at least they didn’t have every elevator ride breaking down).

Good work

I still play FEAR from time to time. For ~ 1 year mid 2017-mid 2018, FEAR stopped working. I was quite happy when I could play it again.

You start to seek out experiences such as the case in FEAR. The anticipation, and an older period of gaming. It wasn’t overly flashy, but it was nice.
The vent rats (cloakers/sneaks/assassins) were annoying in a way that was more like a more amicable rivalry.... except it usual still ends with them in pieces.

Games like FEAR.
Ones where you can still fight, instead of being limited to hide/run.

Also the voice actor for Paxton Fettel (FEAR game) was perfect for the character. He was very important in setting the tones initially, and then in periodic reappearances thereafter.

Didn’t much care for F3ar. It was too much apart from the first. It just came across as more of an arcade mode, set in another game. Also, no more blinking phone message machines, or empty bags of cheezos.

F3ar also increased bullet sponges, likely to make coop feel less like overkill in addition with the new damage upgrades.

God, the first game can easily be titled a classic.

No doubt. I loved the first game and the DLC. Never could get into the sequels though.

F.E.A.R is still the best of the franchise, I still love F.E.A.R 2: Project Origins and F.E.A.R 3 was definitely a step away from scares and clever AI but I still enjoy it with my brother.

Dante Toshiro64

yeah fear 2 though literally made me fear some shit.
