Little Do They Know
Capercaillie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Little do they know the things that you've been through
A nation on its knees, begging for her soul
And time and time again, your tears, they well and flow
To the rivers of our home, is now the time to go?
For little do they know

For years now we've been orphans in a storm
Hanging on in vain for the clouds to unfold
And time and time again, your tears, they well and flow
Is this where I belong? Or is now the time to go?
For little do they know

There isn't a day goes by where I don't hope and pray
There isn't a day goes by
There isn't a day goes by where I don't hope and pray
For change

When all the world is calm with salvation at your door
Those memories will fade and trouble you no more
And I know how it feels when your tears, they well and flow
Is this where I belong? Is now the time to go?
For little do they know

There isn't a day goes by where I don't hope and pray
There isn't a day goes by

There isn't a day goes by where I don't hope and pray
For change

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Capercaillie's song "Little Do They Know" depict a story of a nation, possibly Scotland, that has been struggling for years. The first verse speaks of the hardships that the people of the nation have had to endure, and how their struggles are largely unknown and unacknowledged by the rest of the world. The second verse speaks of the hopelessness and despair that the people feel, as they have been struggling for so long with no end in sight. The chorus, "little do they know," reinforces the idea that the struggles of this nation are largely ignored and unacknowledged by the rest of the world.

The last verse of the song speaks of the hope for change, and how the struggles of the past will eventually fade away. The line "And I know how it feels when your tears, they well and flow, is this where I belong?" suggests that the singer is also struggling with their sense of belonging, and whether or not they should stay and continue to fight, or leave and search for something better. The overall message of the song seems to be one of hope for change, but also of the difficulty and despair that comes with years of struggle.
