Stars Before The Sun
Capstan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This condition persists
I feel the weight of the times from the top of my skull
Down the back of my spine
It never ceases to remind, I'm in dire need of being realigned
The lack of hope, resonates
I've been trapped by the pressure of force fed lies and uncertain futures
Grab a hold of what you can
And hold, dear, before it goes and all just disappears

Such sweet entropy, it's comforting
As the world crashes in on me
Admire all beauty in its brevity

I promised myself "Just live for the day"
Our bodies and bones are built to wither away
Buildings with steel skeletons become ash and decay
Forever learning that the clock will never wait (Never wait)

Such sweet entropy, it's comforting
As the world crashes in on me
Admire all beauty in its brevity
All we've ever built, will one day rust
It's comforting
All that is sought, soon gone at once

The test of time cannot be passed
Everything degrades, nothing's made to last
Be present in every fleeting second before it all becomes the past

And if existence
Is meaningless
Then maybe this somber thought is freeing us

Such sweet entropy, it's comforting
As the world crashes in on me
Admire all beauty in its brevity
All we've ever built, will one day rust

It's comforting
All that is sought, soon gone at once

Overall Meaning

The song "Stars Before The Sun" by Capstan talks about the existential crisis that the singer is going through. The first verse starts with the line "This condition persists", which signifies the persistent feeling of being trapped in the state of confusion and the weight of time holding him down. The weight of time is felt from the top of his skull to the back of his spine, which represents the burden of living in the present and the anxiety of the future.

The lack of hope resonates through the lyrics as the singer is overwhelmed by the force-fed lies and uncertain futures. The pre-chorus advises the singer to hold on to everything that he can because everything disappears so quickly. The chorus talks about the beauty in entropy, which is the belief that everything eventually falls apart and becomes meaningless, and how it brings comfort to the singer.

The bridge tells the listener that the test of time cannot be passed, everything degrades, and nothing can withstand the test of time. Therefore, it is important to stay present in every fleeting second before it all becomes the past. The last lines suggest that the somber thought of existence being meaningless might actually be freeing.

Overall, the song explores the themes of the inevitability of time, the brevity of existence, and the beauty in entropy.

32 years of music browsing and this is one of the most underrated songs I've ever heard.
The time changes, pacing, vocals, are nearly perfected, it's a mix of everything we love from punk.

I don't understand why this stuff doesn't get played on the radio anymore, it would improve mainstream quality standards back to where they used to be, and be a hit on every station.
We need meaningful lyrics & originality to make a come back..

main stream music is meant to dumb down the population, not appreciate musicianship and songwriting skills.

Right?! I can't believe the direction of the modern day music industry. This song deserves to be on the radio and nominated for some sort of Music Originality Award.
