Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band's song Abba Zaba are abstract, and their interpretation can vary from person to person. The song seems to be about a pursuit of some sort, with the repeated line "Babbette baboon, gonna catch her soon." The lyrics also make references to other animals and nature, such as "Indian dream tiger moon" and "Yellow bird fly high." The line "Mother say son she say son you can't lose with the stuff you use" suggests that the pursuit is fueled by a certain substance or ideology.

However, the most prominent feature of the lyrics is the repetition of the phrase "Abba Zaba zoom." This is likely a reference to the Abba Zaba candy bar, which was popular in the United States during the time when the song was written. The candy bar was marketed with the slogan "Abba Zaba, you my only friend," which could explain the repetition of the phrase in the song. Overall, the lyrics are nonsensical and surreal, creating a dream-like atmosphere that adds to the song's experimental and psychedelic sound.

Beefheart was a genius and clearly 'out of the box'. If you 'get' him, he will take you to another world which is 'magical', weird, different, spooky and zany sounding but with strongly defined rhythms at its core . Full of energy, playfullness and craziness it excites and transports beyond banality and drudgery.
