Sheriff Of Hong Kong
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She always shows up when I'm up
But she never shows up when I'm down
But she's under arrest
'cause I might guess
The Sheriff of Hong Kong
Then she goes up in a flash
I bite the end of her sash
Then I'm long gone
To Hong Kong Kong

She never makes a taste mistake
She's the Sheriff of Hong Kong
Now I'm the Sheriff of Hong Kong
Now she's the Sheriff of Hong Kong
Long gone gone
To Hong Kong Kong

Whoa I'm long gone
To Hong Kong Kong

Long gone gone
To Hong Kong Kong
Ad hu
And uh zing hu
I don't know who I am
Do you?
Ohhh ahhh oooh

There's a string and bat dangle
Black and white bat and cat panda
And uh
She's the Sheriff of Hong Kong
And uh
Ad hu
And uh zing hu
I don't know who I am
Do youuuu?

Now she's the Sheriff of Hong Kong gone
I bite the end of her sash
And she's off in a flash
And we're long gone gone
To Hong Kong Kong

There's a string and bat dangle
Black and white bat and cat panda
And uh
She's the Sheriff of Hong Kong and uh
Ad hu
And uh zing hu
Whoa-ohhhh ohhh ohhh

wai ni sha yeh
wai ni sha yeh
she say
ohhh - ohh

Ad hu
Zing hu
wai ni sha yeh
wai ni sha yeh
ohhh
Ad hu
Zing hu
She's the Sheriff of Hong Kong
Zo hu
Zing hu
Aah ohhh
Aaaah oh
Ad hu

Zing hu
Ahhh me and you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band's song Sheriff of Hong Kong are as cryptic as they are entrancing. The song opens with a description of a woman who always appears when everything is going well but disappears when things turn sour. The singer then thinks that she should be arrested as he guesses that she may be the Sheriff of Hong Kong. The woman disappears and there is an implication that the singer bites the end of her sash in a chase to Hong Kong Kong. The second verse confirms that the woman is the Sheriff of Hong Kong, who never makes a mistake in judgment. The last verse repeats some of the earlier phrases while adding more confusion, but the singer and the Sheriff of Hong Kong remain long gone to Hong Kong Kong, where there are apparently strange and intriguing creatures like a string and bat dangle, a black and white bat, and a cat panda.

The meaning of the song is not obvious, but it could be interpreted as a playful commentary on power dynamics, international intrigue, and romantic pursuits. The Sheriff of Hong Kong could represent an authority figure or an object of desire. The singer might be trying to escape or seduce her, but the chase is futile and the relationship is mysterious. The images of strange animals and places add to the surrealistic quality of the song, making it more about creating an atmosphere than conveying a specific message. The lyrics also showcase Captain Beefheart's idiosyncratic style, as he employs unusual sounds, inflections, and words that defy conventional rules of grammar and melody.

It's a miracle of sound..so many layers. The sound is so frantic and loud(with purpose)..the vocals utterly perfect(another instrument). The lyrics and the intent leave you guessing and filling in the blanks. Hard to pick a better song than this.

Agreed, totally. I think it was on this song that French had to drum "after the fact"--after all the other instruments had been laid down, which makes his performance all the more amazing. I love this band as much as the Trout Mask or Decals band. Fantastic album without a dud song on it. I marginally prefer the Bat Chain Puller (2012 Vaulternative release) version of Brickbats, with the sax wailing through it in the background, somehow it just works. Maybe because the band was more minimal? Stil love the version on here, though. And what a cover.

Stoned Meadow Of Doom

One of his all time greatest songs for sure.

Glorious spellbinding stuff. Knocks me out every time I come back to it. It’s more or less 40 years old and the decades don’t touch it at all.
