Blow the Man Down
Captain Dan & The Scurvy Crew Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was a sailor who lived on the sea
(Weeey-oh! Blow the man down)
I knew that only a pirate I'd be
(Weeey-oh! Blow the man down)

(Sea Dawg)
I step in the black mongoose and what what do I see
A scurvy knave in the seat saved for me
I buy him a drink and ask where he's from
Then bash his head in with a bottle of rum
Dazed and confused, he attempts to flee
But me and the men drag his ass out to sea
He's stuck in the bilge, locked tight in a cage
I burn his hometown in a murderous rage
His body now lies in the depths of the bay
I return to the bar and to my dismay
Another sailor sits in my domain
So I buy him a drink and start over again

When I was a sailor who lived on the sea
(Weeey-oh! Blow the man down)
I knew that only a pirate I'd be
(Weeey-oh! Blow the man down)

(Cap D)
There once was this time when I drank too much wine
And when I woke up I was surrounded by SWINE
And so I did swear I got mud in my hair
Covered in faeces I stank in the air
I went to the bar where I'd drank by the stars
They erupted in laughter they thought me bizarre
They told me that last night I'd got in a bar fight,
Killed 15 men and got drunk until light
And then when I went I fell over the fence
And landed with pigs to each one's content
I snuggled them closely and kissed them so slowly
They left me to be with them covered in E Coli!

When I was a sailor who lived on the sea
(Weeey-oh! Blow the man down)

I knew that only a pirate I'd be
(Weeey-oh! Blow the man down)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Captain Dan & The Scurvy Crew's song "Blow the Man Down" depict the life of a sailor who eventually becomes a pirate. The first verse establishes the sailor's yearning to be a pirate and breaks into the chorus chanting "Weeey-oh! Blow the man down." In the Sea Dawg's verse, we see the true colors of a pirate, where he steps into a bar and engages in a conversation with a sailor, only to later kill him with a bottle of rum in a murderous rage. He then becomes more ruthless, locks him in a cage, burns down his hometown, and throws his body into the bay. The last line in his verse, "So I buy him a drink and start over again," shows how there is no remorse for his actions, and he will continue doing what he does best.

In Captain Dan's verse, we see his drunken misadventures where he drinks too much wine and wakes up surrounded by pigs with mud in his hair and covered in faeces. He recollects how last night he had fought 15 men, got drunk until light, and fell over the fence. He even went as far as embracing the pigs and kissing them, leaving him to be covered in E.coli. The song ends with the chorus.
