Grandma
Caravan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Knees on legs, toes on feet
Hair on chest, itchy vest
Woolly pants, nylon socks
Leather boots smash down the grass
Oh, grandma's lawn has just been mown
Ten feet tall, overgrown with weeds

Cold blue light, warm red light
Blue-green grass, jangling glass
These things I bought, Comisio sauce
Lima rice, water cress and Misco soup
So spare a thought for Albert Gott

Colored lights, see-through tights
Moist-wet lips, heavy hips
Silvery sheets, crumbling thoughts
Parting legs, curried eggs
The meal we had was very bad
Too much Yin and not enough Yang

Lost my plec, bloody heck
Who's got my plec, break his neck
The rent's due, feeling blue
Got no bread, so in the street
We all will meet with nothing to do
No place to eat, nowhere to glue dolly friends

To my surprise, in a teardrop reflected
A scene there is you

Surrounded by vast carpet of bell-blue
There is me too

Overall Meaning

The song "Grandma's Lawn" by Caravan is an interesting portrayal of everyday life through the eyes of the singer. The first verse talks about the aftermath of having just mown grandma's lawn, describing the various items of clothing and footwear that were worn during the task. With vivid imagery, the singer paints a picture of the destroyed grass with the boots smashing down on it. The verse concludes with a contradiction between two images - the lawn being overgrown with weeds and being just mown. Perhaps this contradiction represents the duality of life, where things can seem contradictory or paradoxical.

The second verse seems to shift focus, as the singer talks about things that he has bought, such as Comisio sauce, lima rice, water cress, and Misco soup. He then asks the listener to spare a thought for someone named Albert Gott. The apparent randomness of the thoughts in this verse is representative of the chaotic nature of everyday life, with people having a variety of thoughts, feelings, and experiences in any given moment.

The final verse is a mixture of the humorous and nonsensical. The singer talks about things like colored lights, see-through tights, curried eggs, and lost plecs (guitar picks). The final two lines of the song depict the singer's reflection in a teardrop, in which both he and the listener are surrounded by a vast carpet of bell-blue.

Thanks for the heads up that a butane cannister can leak laying flat. From now on, I'll be standing it up👍. But, again, I notice as, in most all van tours, that the stove is surrounded by flammables! I suggest invest in some kind of metal box big enough to cook in but can still fit atop counter. I found mine at a thrift store that was a rolling mini toolbox. It has a door that swings open, and my stove fits perfectly in it with enough room for a small pan and some kitchen utensils. I feel very safe to cook inside my suv, knowing in case any flare-ups or other kinds of accidents, everything will be contained inside something metal. Remember in case a small explosion inside a van that gets out of hand and causes a total loss, the insurance company will not cover the loss if determines owner was at fault. I once had an electrical fire in my old trailblazer that my insurance investigated and found it was faulty wiring. I was paid very well by my insurance. But I can imagine it going the other way if me cooking inside is what originated the fire. So that's my heads up to y'all ladies.
