The Whole Truth
Carbon / Silicon Lyrics

The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
So help me
Truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth

Through the blacked out windows of the police van
You can see your last flash moments as a free man
What did they expect you to say
When you was hoping it would go away?

The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
So help me
Truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth

Got involved by mischance ended up in grief
Cleared out the house then phoned up your brief
All this stress is making me ill
I've had enough so do what you will

In your dreams in your fantasy
The judge and jury and the court agree
You should go free
You should go free

In your slumbers it may be so
But if you don't tell them what they wanna know
Wanna know
What they want to know

The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
So help me
Truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth

As the gates slams behind you in the red light glare
You'll be asking yourself if you really dare
Still in truth you can't say nothing at all
You rack your mind, but still can't recall

The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
So help me
Truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth

In the booth they used a burning light?
They expect you to put up a fight
Put up a fight
Or be polite

With circumstances well in remand
If you don't give them what they demand
What they demand
What they demand

The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
So help me
Truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
So help me
Truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
So help me
Truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
So help me
Truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth

The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth

Overall Meaning

This song, "The Whole Truth" by Carbon / Silicon, speaks to the intense pressure and fear that can accompany being interrogated or put on trial. The repeated phrase "the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth" is a reference to the oath that witnesses are required to take before giving testimony in court, promising to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. The first verse describes being transported in a police van, with the window blocks preventing the singer from seeing outside and anticipating their life changing forever. The second verse describes the stress and fear that come with being accused of a crime, and the tension of not knowing what to say or how to act when asked for information. The following verses continue to describe the pressure put on the accused, urging them to give in and tell the expected story, even if it is not the truth.

Overall, the song speaks to the ways in which the justice system can manipulate and intimidate those who are on trial, and the immense pressure to say what is expected rather than what is true. The use of repetition throughout the song ("the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth," "what they want to know," etc.) underscores the sense of being trapped and unable to escape from the demands of the court.
