Dear
Carbon Leaf Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lie awake and look through the trees
My dear, my dear
I am waiting, breathe my name
My dear, my dear

Drift now to sleep, fall with the rain
My dear, my dear
I'm not awaking, forget my name
My dear, my dear

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song "Dear" by Carbon Leaf are poetic and packed with emotion. The first verse talks about lying awake and looking through the trees while waiting for someone. This could be interpreted as waiting for a lover or waiting for a friend. The use of "my dear" adds a tone of endearment and closeness, making it feel more intimate. The singer is waiting for someone to return or show up, and they long for the person to breathe their name, indicating a desire for them to acknowledge their presence.

The second verse shifts the tone and talks about the person drifting off to sleep and falling with the rain. The singer says they are not waking up and instructs them to forget their name. This could be interpreted as a bid to move on or an acceptance of the fact that the person is gone, and the singer needs to let go. The use of sleep and rain both add to the peaceful and calming tone.

Overall, the lyrics of "Dear" are open to interpretation and leave a lot of room for personal connection. The use of repetition and the phrase "my dear" helps to add to the emotional intensity of the song.

The folksy haunting nature of this song fits the end of the movie "Wicked Springs", to which it is attached, so well.

This is Carbon Leaf's best music ever. You have to wonder why it was a hidden track on Echo Echo.  Nothing else they've ever recorded has even come close to the hits as this has. Just love sitting back and listening to this tune.

There's nothing quite so pure as this song.  This entire album was pretty well flawless, though.  ...To me, at least.

Great song. My father had just died. 83 years old. A country vet with the soul of a poet. I was leaving the hospice and had just bought this CD. I had heard every song on the CD except this last track. Picture it.....my beloved and greatly loved father had just breathed his last breath.....and this is the song that played. Thanks. It is a memory that will go with me till my last day and breath.

"A country Vet with the soul of a poet". It looks like the apple didn't fall far from the tree! Your line and this song brought me to tears.

I hear it for the first time while watching the movie Wicked Spring, took me forever to find an online version. It was hidden for a long time. Not sure why since it is so good.
