8. Consider this 2015 study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. In this study, researchers compared the energy expenditure of 30 minutes of weight training, to 30 minutes of a HIIT/circuit style training workout, to 30 minutes of a steady-state cardio workout performed at 70% of the particpant's maximum heart rate. As you can see in the graph in front of you, there was no significant difference in energy expenditure between weight training and steady-state cardio

10. Another meta-analysis also found that adding cardio to a diet plan did not increase weight loss compared to not doing so. The difference was 11 kilos of weight loss versus 10.7 kilos, respectively.

@chips1752
I think you are a little wrong here, I quote from said study," The resistance training consisted of 6 exercises—squat, chest press, leg extension, shoulder press, leg curl, seated row—at 3 sets of 10 repetitions each at 75% 1RM (Vigorous as described by ACSM) (6). Rest periods between sets lasted for 60 seconds, resulting in a total time of approximately 30 minutes. The subjects were maximally encouraged verbally by a researcher throughout each exercise, to ensure consistency." Seems like a semi intense session for me but not unrealistic. So something like 180 repetitions total with 17 minute total of rest. What worries me is that 75% of 1 rep max, for me it is probably somewhere around 150lb, that seems sort of intense to me (personally, i generally train a little lighter than that)
they also calculate heart rate averages throughout the trials in figure 4, and doing a semi intense resistance training seems similar to the other forms of cardio cited.
What is true in the study but he failed to mention is that, resistance training burned the least amount of calories but not by much, caused more sense of fatigue, cycling/treadmill burned way more fat VS carbs then resistance training.
Personally I think, what he says still shouldnt apply, not because of what you said but because if there is less overall fatigue with treadmill/cycling, i could do more, maybe do 1 hour of cycling or more, but i cant imagine myself doing that much of resistance training.
The study i think is faulty for people that plan to do more than 30 min of exercise. And most important of all, cycling burns more fat than carbs! I think thats what we all want right?

The older I get, the more I realize that we all need to do three things to get and STAY physically strong: Eat well, Sleep well, and get moving.
Your body will take care of the rest.
Nature has one heck of a menu from which we can choose.
Blocking out enough time for a good night’s sleep will be tough at first, but the benefits of consistently doing it are outstanding (Evenings in my home can be chaotic with two kids, but I realized I used that as an excuse).
Turn off the TV and get outside. Find a movement you like and do it.
I watched this video more out of curiosity than anything, but it did confirm my own thoughts that people make the topic of Health out to be something that’s nearly impossible to understand, and it doesn’t have to be this way.
@lordraven1991
I love that this video came up on the heels of me having a four-day stomach bug. Over those four days, my total intake of food and drink wouldn't even match a normal single days intake. And in those four days I have already lost a notch on my belt, and if I'm being honest, I can achieve the same effect by just going a whole day without eating or drinking anything.
Is any of this "healthy" advice to people, not at all. What most people fail to understand in weight lost programs that nobody seems to ever want to mention (not even in this video) is that fat loss and muscle gain is not 1=1 in weight.
In high school I started working out for real the first time in my life, not from just doing stuff around the house, but actually lifting weights. I went from around 3,000-3,800 calories a day to roughly 8,000-9,000 a day. Wake up at 4 in the morning, drink 3 cups of coffee, go to school, eat the school breakfast, eat the school lunch, work out for roughly an hour in gym class, get home, go to work, then eat up to 5 double bacon cheeseburgers with matching large fries and drink every night at work, before going home again and having a large burrito, plate of spaghetti, or even more hamburgers. And did this for over 6 months.
I gained 5 pounds and dropped 2 pants sizes in those 6 months. Best guestimate, I lost 25 pounds of fat, and gained 30 pounds of muscles.
Just because your weight isn't going down doesn't mean what you're doing isn't working, or is pointless, it just means you have to keep working to see the effects of what you are doing show through.
PS, according to the health books at my school at the time I was obese with a 36" waist (I dropped it to 32" before I bulked up my core to help my growing back problems). The calorie guide said I needed around 2,800 calories a day just for my body to maintain being alive, hence the high base calorie diet. I frequently meet people that are 5'10"+ with 38"-40" waist that weigh equal or less than I do with my current size, I'm 5' 8" 220lbs with a 38" waist.
@vguy488
As a runner with this exact question, I put my own study to the test.
1 month pure cardio - 8km 6 days a week, 1 day off.
Results: 2 lbs loss, 1% BMI loss, 0.8% fat loss. Increased fatigue and enhanced appetite.
1 month HIIT and weight training.
Results: 6 lbs loss, 2% BMI loss, 2% fat loss. Easier to manage appetite and overall times actually improved for running.
This is of course a simple Excel spreadsheet personal study just to see what would happen, but at least for me it showed that simply focusing on one exercise is ineffective, variation is the name of the game.

The first study you presented in the video is comparing every type of exercise when one is working at 70% of his maximum heart rate.
Resistance training at 70% percent of the maximum heart rate is really exhausting. Cardio at 70% is not so hard and i still burn more calories.
@gregdoucette
Within the first minute you’re already misinterpreting the information to make it look like there’s no difference. Obviously if your heart rate is about the same on each activity 70% it’s going to burn similar calories. The problem is when you do cardio your heart rate is not the same as when you do weightlifting workouts. Not even close I’m sitting on a bike as I type this and this infuriates me. People don’t lift weights with a heart rate is 70% of the maximum the entire time. If you actually track how many calories people burn while lifting weights compared to say riding a bike at a moderate pace it’s night and day difference. Cardio burns way more
