Melody Day
Caribou Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Melody day, what have I done? (Ah)
Now our hearts are locked up tight again
And when I pray it's all begun
And when you smile it melts away again

Melody day, where have you gone? (Ooh)
All the hope I had has gone away
And what we had has come undone
And when you smile it melts away again

Be there
Be there
Be there
Be there

Melody day, what have I done? (Ah)
Now our hearts are locked up tight again
And when I pray it's all begun
And when you smile it melts away again

Tell them, oh
Tell them I always knew why, oh
So long, oh
So long to say goodbye

Be there
Be there

Be there
Be there

Overall Meaning

The song Melody Day by Caribou seems to be about a love relationship that has gone sour. The singer seems to be regretting something they did that has caused the separation between them and their partner. The first line 'Melody day, what have I done?' suggests that the singer is conscious of their actions and aware of the repercussions they’ve brought on their relationship. The second line 'Now our hearts are locked up tight again' implies the relationship has been strained, and any attempts to reconcile are futile.

The singer is seeking solace from prayer, hoping that things can go back to the way they were before. The third line 'And when I pray it's all begun' suggests that the singer is not over the relationship and is trying to find ways to bring an end to the separation. The final line of the first verse 'And when you smile it melts away again' indicates that the singer is giving in to temptation whenever their partner tries to make amends, but the healing process doesn’t seem to last.

In the chorus, the singer begs their partner to be present, 'Be there' repeatedly, hoping that their partner can see how much they are needed in their life. The second verse summarizes the whole relationship, indicating that all their plans and dreams have come undone, leaving them with nothing. The song’s closing lines suggest that the singer knew why their partner was important to them and that saying goodbye to them will be hard.

hits the 60's beat vibe head on... the tight drum fills, harmonic vocals, sunny psychedelia... a genius track

I will forever love this album. I was at a house I was staying at with a bunch of friends, basically a messy loud party house. The party started to die down and this kid came in raving about this CD and how it "changed his life", and he put it in our boombox and put it on continuous repeat. I laid on this dirty fold out couch and just stared at the ceiling and listened. The album must've played at least six times and everybody had gone home but I remained just lying there and listening
