A Storm Is Coming
Carl Barât & The Jackals Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rain, rain, rain for forty days
To wash away the faithless sons
They say when all is said and done
The rains will come, the rains will come

Tiger, tiger burning bright
A reckoning will come tonight
We're born with masks and bred to lie
One has to try, the heavens sigh

I don't mind,
I know a storm is coming
Things won't ever be the same again

You can't run this time
It has to be now or never
Sooner or later it has to end

I saw your mark, it's on the wall
So nothing else will hurt at all
When they all go the other way
This world is ours and we will stay

The cloud froze up a dying sky,
The rivers rise, the flames are high
Now they can sail with all the thieves
And we can watch the last ship leave

But I don't mind,
I know a storm is coming
Things won't ever be the same again

You can't run this time
It has to be now or never
Sooner or later it has to end

I don't mind,
I know a storm is coming
Things won't ever be the same again

I won't run this time

It has to be now or never
Sooner or later it has to end

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "A Storm Is Coming" appear to be about the judgement day or the end of the world, and the coming storm is a metaphor for the chaos and destruction that will come with it. The first verse refers to the story of Noah's Ark, where rain fell for forty days to cleanse the earth of the faithless. The rains washing away the faithless sons here could be interpreted as the storm coming to clean up the world of its sins. The lyrics then move on to refer to a "reckoning" that is coming, which is likely a judgement day of some kind. The lines "We're born with masks and bred to lie/ One has to try, the heavens sigh" suggest that deception has become a part of human nature, and there is still time to try to change it, but time is running out.

The chorus sings, "I don't mind, I know a storm is coming/ Things won't ever be the same again/ You can't run this time/ It has to be now or never/ Sooner or later it has to end”. The repeating line "I don't mind" in the chorus can be interpreted in a few ways. It could mean that the singer is at peace with the end of the world coming, or perhaps they have accepted that they are not in control and can only prepare for what is to come. The final verse speaks about the end of the world, where the sky is dying, and the rivers are rising, and flames are spreading. The world belongs to those who have stayed true to themselves, and they watch as the world burns down.
