Dies nox et omnia
Carl Orff Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dies, nox et omnia
Michi sunt contraria;
Virginum colloquia
Me fay planszer,
Oy suvenz suspirer,
Plu me fay temer.
O sodales, ludite,
Vos qui scitis dicite
Michi mesto parcite,
Grand ey dolur,
Attamen consulite
Per voster honur.
Tua pulchra facies
Me fay planszer milies,
Pectus habet glacies.
A remender

Statim vivus fierem
Per un baser.

Overall Meaning

The opening line of the song, "Dies, nox et omnia" ("Day, night, and everything"), portrays a sense of utter frustration and despair. The singer declares that everything in the world opposes them, making their life unbearable. They mourn the loss of a virgin's companionship, and their sorrow only leads to more sighs and fear.

The singer then turns to their companions and requests them to play and sing, as it might provide some temporary relief from their sadness. They ask their friends to speak kind words to them, but at the same time, they warn them of the immense grief and pain that they carry. However, the singer also suggests that their friends should help them by honoring them, implying perhaps that this could be done by providing some form of support.

The final stanza talks about how the beauty of the beloved torments the singer endlessly. Their heart feels like ice, and only a single kiss could make them come alive again. The song is a haunting lament of a troubled soul and evokes a sense of despair, sorrow, and longing for love.

I haven't understood the joke.

@nonsense618

@@DumbWaiters It’s just that the way he sings sounds like the way I sound when I’m trying to speak through a yawn, but he actually sounds good.

Youtube and Shazam recognize it as Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Richard Cooke

@smiafly this text isn't entirely latin, just look at it closely. the first three lines of a stanza are in vulgar latin whereas the second three lines are in old french.
