Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby
Carl Perkins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, they took some honey from a tree
Dressed it up and they called it me

Everybody's trying to be my baby
Everybody's trying to be my baby
Everybody's trying to be my baby, now

I woke up last night, half past four
Fifteen women knocking on my door

Everybody's trying to be my baby
Everybody's trying to be my baby
Everybody's trying to be my baby, now

Went out last night, didn't stay late
Before home I had nineteen dates

Everybody's trying to be my baby
Everybody's trying to be my baby
Everybody's trying to be my baby, now

I woke up last night, half past four
Fifteen women knocking at my door

Everybody's trying to be my baby
Everybody's trying to be my baby
Everybody's trying to be my baby, now

Well, they took some honey from a tree
Dressed it up and they called it me

Everybody's trying to be my baby

Everybody's trying to be my baby
Everybody's trying to be my baby, now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby by Carl Perkins are a playful and sarcastic account of the singer's experiences with women who try to win him over. In the first verse, Perkins describes how people have taken something sweet, like honey from a tree, and pretended it was him. This could be interpreted as society trying to mold him into a desirable and marketable image. This type of pressure is common in the music industry where label executives often try to package an artist in a certain way to appeal to the public.

In the subsequent verses, Perkins recounts how he has been pursued by numerous women. The chorus repeats the line "Everybody's trying to be my baby" which could indicate that despite the attention he receives, he feels that people are trying to use him for their own gain rather than genuinely caring for him. The last line of the chorus, "now", is repeated after each line, emphasizing the immediacy and urgency of everyone's efforts to become his partner.

Overall, the song highlights the challenges that come with fame and the pressure to maintain a certain image, but it does so in a lighthearted and humorous way.

George Harrison and Carl Perkins, a match made in rock n roll heaven

@johnnycash1365

George is happier in this one video than in any Beatles video I've seen..

@mrsbluesky8415

There’s one video of George w the Beatles in Sweden or somewhere and he’s got the right side mic (John’s) normal spot. He was so happy in that concert because it looked like he had the spotlight or maybe it was his song. It’s here on YT.

@psychedelic.dreamer

@@mrsbluesky8415do you know what song it was?

@NaaHva

In the later videos, it's because he was standing next to Billy and playing his songs. George (and the others for that matter) tried their best to move on after Paul's death in 1966.

@bertblomsma2250

Just watching this video and thinking exactly the same as you 👍. Like a happy Robbie Williams who is glad that the back street boys are finally over and he can do his own thing.

George Harrison stormed up to the mic and started singing like he owned it. And he did!
