My dad was a copyist who worked at Warner Bros. He did the parts transcriptions for the instruments from the master score. "What's Opera Doc?" was his favorite piece that he worked on. Eventually, after the recordings were made, the parts pieces were tossed, and my dad used to bring home reams of the stuff that we would use for scrap writing. I wish I could say I kept some of it around.

I am so glad you gave kudos the Mr Stalling who aptly deserves it.

Omg, I bet you do. Those would be worth a pretty penny today.

That's quite a wonderful story to read regardless. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much for this video. I've always admired Stalling. He created rich, original, imaginative, incredibly skilled, impeccably performed sound experiences. He deserves to be highly ranked among composers.

This is why I like this channel. Most classical scholars would scoff and the notion of giving Carl Stalling recognition for his brilliant work.

Also, if you haven't heard of him, add to that Roy Shield. And there are others, including the various composers like Stalling, Shield, and so on, who did work for cartoons, short films, etc.

Shield's work was almost lost (in terms of its original compositions) were it not for the Dutch group "Beau Hunks" who literally scraped Shield's musical themes and cues from the various short films of the Our Gang and Laurel and Hardy films.

I guess when you have a degree in music and teach it (which Im fairly certain David Bruce does) it means people can't pull rank anymore

Robert Davidson

Not really - it's very widespread to give acclaim to Carl Stalling these days (since the late 1980s).

Russ Jones

You got that right, brother.

A discussion of Carl Stalling should at least include a (short) mention of Raymond Scott in my opinion. Scott sold his publishing catalog to Warner Bros and Stalling made great use of it for the cartoons. Most of the non-classical influences in Stallings music come from ragtime and jazz via Scott, so it's a non-trivial contribution to the style and impact of Stalling's body of work.
Thank you very much for these videos, always super interesting!
Please consider doing a video about Spectral Music (Grisey, Haas, Barlow, Lindberg, Sciarrino, etc...) and microtonality, harmony, overtones within this context.
