At the age of 5, her family left for Paris. When she was 19, she decided to stop studying art and architecture, to become a full-time model.
She was a very successful fashion model until 1998. Since then she has devoted herself to chanson. Her debut album, Quelqu'un m'a dit, on which she sings in French (despite her Italian origin), was released in 2002. To date it has sold over a million copies across Europe. Her second album, No Promises (this time in English, with songs inspired by famous English-language poets), was released in January 2007.
She married then French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, in the beginning of 2008.
Her music career still did not cease after becoming the First Lady. She released her third album Comme si de rien n'était ("As If Nothing Happened") on 11 July 2008. The songs are self-penned except for one rendition of You Belong to Me and another song featuring a poem by Michel Houellebecq set to music. Royalties from the album will be donated to unidentified charitable and humanitarian cause.
La noyée
Carla Bruni Lyrics

The song "La noyee" by Carla Bruni is a beautiful and melancholic piece that describes a relationship that is drifting away. The lyrics talk about a person who is slowly drifting away on the river of memory, while the singer is running along the riverbank, begging the person to come back to her. The person keeps moving away, but the singer manages to catch up with them gradually. Throughout the song, the person is described as struggling with their past and afraid of being disfigured by shame and regret. The singer, on the other hand, remains loyal to the person and even jumps into the water to follow them.
The overall tone of the song is one of sadness and melancholy. It is a beautiful analogy of a relationship that is fading away, and the sadness that comes with it. The imagery is vivid and emotive, making it easy for the listener to connect with the emotions in the song. The lyrics describe the struggle between memory and forgetting, and how these two seemingly opposite forces can bring people together in a profound and meaningful way.

Tu t'en vas à la dérive
You're drifting away
Sur la rivière du souvenir
On the river of memories
Et moi, courant sur la rive
And I, running on the shore
Je te crie de revenir
I cry out for you to come back
Mais, lentement, tu t'éloignes
But slowly, you move away
Et dans ta course éperdue
And in your frantic rush
Peu à peu, je te regagne
Gradually, I win you back
Un peu du terrain perdu
A bit of the lost ground
De temps en temps, tu t'enfonces
From time to time, you sink
Dans le liquide mouvant
In the moving liquid
Ou bien, frôlant quelques ronces
Or, brushing against a few thorns
Tu hésites et tu m'attends
You hesitate and wait for me
En te cachant la figure
Hiding your face
Dans ta robe retroussée
In your hiked up dress
De peur que ne te défigurent
Afraid of being disfigured
Et la honte et les regrets
And shame and regret
Tu n'es plus qu'une pauvre épave
You're just a poor wreck
Chienne crevée au fil de l'eau
A dead dog in the water
Mais je reste ton esclave
But I remain your slave
Et plonge dans le ruisseau
And dive into the stream
Quand le souvenir s'arrête
When the memory stops
Et l'océan de l'oubli
And the ocean of forgetfulness
Brisant nos coeurs et nos têtes
Breaking our hearts and heads
À jamais, nous réunit
Forever unites us

One of the most beautiful ballads I've ever heard in my life (I know the lyrics because of the English translation, but in this case I really wish I knew French as a first language).
