Please Don't Kiss Me
Carla Bruni Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But if you kiss me
Don't take your lips
Away
Please don't hold me
But if you hold me
Don't take your arms
Comes a change in weather
Comes a change of heart
And who knows when the rain
Will start?
So I beg you
Please don't love me
But if you love me
Then don't take your lips, or your arms, or your love
Away
In the song "Please Don't Kiss Me" by Carla Bruni, the lyrics express a complex and conflicting emotional state, focusing on the fear of intimacy and vulnerability. The repetition of the phrases "Please don't" and "But if you" highlights the internal struggle of wanting connection while also resisting it.
The first verse begins with the plea "Please don't kiss me," which immediately sets a tone of hesitation and caution. It suggests a fear of getting too close or becoming emotionally attached. However, the following line "But if you kiss me, don't take your lips away" reveals a longing for the kiss and a desire for the moment of intimacy to be prolonged. This contradiction reflects the ambivalence towards affection and a struggle with the fear of getting hurt.
In the second verse, the lyrics continue with a plea not to hold the person, but again expressing the longing for the touch to continue if it were to happen. The use of "Don't take your arms away" indicates a desire for comfort and reassurance. These lines convey the paradoxical nature of wanting physical closeness but also fearing the consequences that it may bring.
The bridge section of the song introduces another layer of uncertainty with the line "Comes a change in weather, comes a change of heart." This metaphor implies that circumstances can shift abruptly, and emotions can change unexpectedly. This adds to the fear of investing in a relationship or allowing oneself to be vulnerable. The uncertainty is also captured in the line "And who knows when the rain will start?" suggesting that the person is aware that challenges or difficulties may arise.
Finally, the lyrics conclude with a direct plea for the person not to love them. It touches on the underlying fear of emotional attachment and the potential pain that love can bring. The line "Then don't take your lips, or your arms, or your love away" encapsulates the fear of losing not only physical affection but also the emotional connection that comes with it.
Overall, Carla Bruni's "Please Don't Kiss Me" conveys a struggle between the desire for connection and the fear of vulnerability, illustrating the complexity of love and intimacy. The repetition and contradictory nature of the lyrics emphasize the internal battle and emotional ambivalence experienced by the singer.
