Though her recording career had begun in the late 1970s with her eponymous debut album, it was with 1990's I Fell in Love that Carter's career really took off, with the album and title song topping the US country albums and singles charts, respectively. The album, which featured straight-ahead, retro-sounding country (her prior work had combined country, rock and roll and pop sounds), was among the first successes of the 1990s "neotraditionalist" movement in country. 1993's Little Love Letters featured the hit "Every Little Thing", which was accompanied by one of the top-rated music videos of the year.
Carter's winning stream ended with 1995's Little Acts of Treason, which, while critically well received, failed to achieve the commercial success of the Carter's two previous releases.
She also found limited amounts of fame with the song "It takes one to know me", which was released on the albums "Johnny Cash the Legend" and "Johnny and June duets". Originally recorded in 1977 with a full string backing group, it was lost in a tape collection in Hendersonville and uncovered in 2003. It was then remastered by her brother John Carter Cash. In the remastered version, John added his and his wife Laura's backing vocals and a guest appearance from Carlene herself - more than 35 years after she wrote and recorded the song.
She was played by Victoria Hester in the movie Walk the Line.
The track 'Every Little Thing' is also featured in the pinball machine 'Red and Ted's Road Show' released by Williams Electronic Games in 1994. Carter also does the voice of one of the main characters in the pinball game

Tired of livin', I feel like cryin'
I'm gonna take off in a big jet plane
Take me to Waikiki
Some peace and quiet where no one complains
I need a drastic change of scenery
He don't love me, I don't need him
And now I'm leavin'
I'll slip away while he's sleepin' it off
I've got the perfect plan
I'll leave this dump without a second thought
And I ain't never comin' back again
I've had it up to here, I can't take anymore
Winds of change are knockin' on my door
I came into town on a slow movin' train
I'm gonna blow out of here like a hurricane
I've had it up to here, I can't take anymore
Winds of change are knockin' on my door
I came into town on a slow movin' train
I'm gonna blow out of here like a hurricane
Now do like I do girls
Take my advice
If your man don't treat you right
Get even when you're leavin'
Buy a new dress, let your hair down
Brand new address, brand new town
Now there's no limit on his credit card
I think I'll go for it all
I think it's time for a brand new car
Not too big but not too small A little Ferrari
I've had it up to here, I can't take anymore
Winds of change are knockin' on my door
I came into town on a slow movin' train
I'm gonna blow out of here like a hurricane
I came into town on a slow movin' train
Now watch me blow out of here like a hurricane
The song Hurricane by Carlene Carter is about a woman who is completely fed up with her life and decides to make a drastic change. She is sick of everything including work, relationships, and life in general. She needs a break from everything and decides to escape to Waikiki for some peace and quiet. She is also in a toxic relationship with a man who doesn't love her and pushes and shoves her around. She decides to leave him while he is sleeping and never come back again. The song suggests that if someone is unhappy in a relationship or with their life, they should make a change and get even while leaving.
The chorus repeats the lines "I've had it up to here, I can't take anymore. Winds of change are knockin' on my door. I came into town on a slow movin' train, I'm gonna blow out of here like a hurricane", which symbolize the woman's determination to leave everything behind and start anew. The song also conveys a strong feminist message, encouraging women to take control of their lives and make decisions that lead to their happiness and empowerment.
Overall, the song Hurricane by Carlene Carter is a powerful anthem for women who need to break free from toxic relationships and unsatisfactory lives. It promotes the message of self-love and taking charge of one's own destiny.
