This still remains, after 50 yrs or more, the best version i've ever heard in my life (Sorry Astrid Gilberto, sorry Sinatra)..and we've all heard so many by notable artists. The melancholy Wes captures here plus his imagination as he weaves through the melody is priceless.

To me, this is the greatest recording of all time. It has a lot going for it on every level. In his own bailiwick (which includes genius of accompaniment, playing melodic lines that support, counterpoint, and fill in for Montgomery), the bassist is as good as Montgomery (in my opinion). (I believe it is Ron Carter.) The drumming is perfect (I believe Grady Tate), the arrangement is also right on (Claus Ogerman; credit also to Creed Taylor for producing). I have listened to this recording countless times, and it never loses its luster. Montgomery's musicality and soul are illuminated by his playing. He must have practiced and played a lot, for the guitar is not easily tamed. (I know this from experience.) You may even get it to behave for a little while in a song, but to play like Montgomery? Priceless.

How correct you are that the guitar isn't easily tamed.... Wes once quipped when someone asked him about his practice regimen, "Every once in a while, I just open up the guitar case and throw in a piece of meat!"

We had this LP, Tequila, and this song is where I discovered my "cool". Wes is still the greatest, not limited by anything musically! he could incorporate melody within chordal structure as well as solo his behind off !!!

Well said. Some of the shredding can be really intricate and well thought out (some of Pat Metheny's fast stuff, Jeff Beck, Satriani are my favorites for that), but yeah, some can not really be fun to listen to. It is very impressive how fast Wes can play with his thumb, and I agree that his chord solos are amazing; how clean he gets them to sound.

I recall reading that Wes developed his style of guitar playing because his wife asked him to keep the noise down while he practiced. He died too song. Such a civilizer of songs he way. Miss ya, Wes.

My all time favourite. Learned the songs from original c-casette Tequila in sixties.

Well as far as the influence he had on guitarists, I would say he's up there. I can see how people would be ahead of him based on their speed compared to him, and their shredding capability, but he still deserves some mention among the top.

Two of the greatest guitarists are Wes and Django. Their melody lines have very little to do with 'speed.' By contrast, they are all about the pure melody and its syncopation. In fact, Django and Wes sometimes play quite slowly and they blow the doors off any rock and roller I've ever heard.

@iadlaws Wes had a truly blessed soul...thank god he chose to concentrate on guitar when he was already 19 yrs old....imagine if he started at 5 or 6. well probably wouldnt have mattered since he was a genius anyway....god bless Wes and all his fans too.

when was this dark time? I love the Jobim songs that he covered and I wish I was from his era-he is the best guitarist that ever lived and his improvization was brillant-I did not like the Beatles era when he had too much over production in the studio.
