Gardel possessed a baritone voice deployed with unerring musicality and dramatic phrasing, creating miniature masterpieces among the hundreds of three-minute tangos which he recorded during his lifetime. Together with his long-term collaborator, lyricist Alfredo Le Pera, Gardel also wrote several classic tangos, notably 'Mi Buenos Aires querido', 'Amores de Estudiante', 'Soledad', 'Volver', 'Por una cabeza' and 'El día que me quieras'.
Gardel was born to unmarried 25-year-old laundress Berthe Gardes, the baby registered under the name Charles Romuald Gardes in Toulouse, France, on 11 December 1890. The father of the baby boy was listed on his birth certificate as "unknown"; eleven days later Berthe Gardes signed a statement establishing the baby's father as Paul Laserre, a married man who left Toulouse a few months before the baby was born. Berthe Gardes left Toulouse a few years later, likely to escape the social stigma of having a child born out of wedlock. In early 1893 in Bordeaux, France, mother and son boarded the ship SS Don Pedro and sailed to Buenos Aires, arriving on 11 March 1893. Berthe Gardes had her passport recorded; she told immigration authorities that she was a widow. The two-year-old boy was recorded as Charles Gardes.
Gardel grew up going by Carlos, the Spanish version of his French name, and often by the familiar diminutive form Carlitos. He lived in the Abasto neighborhood of Buenos Aires. He attended Pio IX Industrial high-school located in the Almagro neighborhood of Buenos Aires. His mother worked pressing clothes in the French style.
Gardel began his career singing in bars and at private parties, and in 1911 formed a duet with Francisco Martino, and after with José Razzano (which would last until 1925), singing a wide repertory. Gardel made the music his own by inventing the tango-canción in 1917 with 'Mi Noche Triste', a theme by Pascual Contursi and Samuel Castriota, which sold 100,000 copies and was a hit throughout Latin America. Gardel went on to tour Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia and made appearances in Barcelona, Madrid, Paris and New York. He sold 70,000 records in the first three months of a 1928 visit to Paris. As his popularity grew, he made a number of films for the Paramount in France and the USA, which were essentially vehicles for his singing and matinée-idol looks.
When Gardel and his collaborator Le Pera were killed in an airplane crash in Medellín, Colombia in 1935, millions of his fans throughout Latin America went into mourning. Hordes of people thronged to pay their respects as the singer's body travelled via Colombia, New York and Rio de Janeiro to its final resting place in La Chacarita cemetery in Buenos Aires.
Gardel is still revered from Buenos Aires to Tokyo, where people like to say that "he sings better every day." His fans still like to place a lit cigarette in the fingers of the life-sized statue which adorns his tomb. One of Gardel's favourite phrases, 'Veinte años no es nada' (Twenty years is nothing) became a famous saying across Latin America.

con este tango llorón.
Quiero contento escucharlo,
sentirlo y bailarlo
cantando su son.
Vuelen sus notas buscando el amor
que mi alegría soñó,
no son sus sones extraños,
Quiero esta noche escuchar tu melodía
para reírme con vos hasta el final,
quiero matar sin piedad la pena mía;
ya nunca más quiero ser sentimental.
Siento el nostálgico ayer y todavía
quiero vivir mi niñez con su cristal.
(Hablado. Piano solo.)
Y el tango mío, con alma de ayer,
Oigo que me habla en sus lamentos.
Yo que arrullé tu niñez
en la dulce quietud,
quise brindarte después
una feliz juventud...
Vos te alejaste del sol...
y en la noche fatal
equivocaste tu rol
entre la luz nocturnal.
Por eso tango, yo quiero que vos,
cuando me aleje de aquí,
me acompañes con tus sones
y los bandoneones
que giman por mí...
Si los violines quisieran llorar
y el piano muere de amor,
con musical inocencia,
llorá por mi ausencia
si nadie lloró.
AUSENCIA
Vals
Música: Carlos Gardel / José Razzano
Letra: Francisco Bianco
Desvelado tu ausencia me tiene
padeciendo mi bien sin cesar
y tu nombre a mi memoria viene
¿Qué motivo te he dado, alma mía,
para que así me hagas padecer?
Es en vano llorar,
nada calma el dolor
que atormenta mi ser abatido
destrozando mi trono de amor.
The song "Ausencia" by Carlos Gardel is a melancholic and nostalgic tango about the pain and emptiness caused by the absence of a loved one. The lyrics express the desire to listen to the sad and emotional notes of the tango, to dance it and to feel it, but also to overcome the sentimentalism and nostalgia that haunt the singer. The first part of the song is a call to the orchestra to play the tango, and to let the notes fly in search of the love that once brought happiness to the singer. The second part is a dialogue between the singer and the tango itself, which he imagines as a friend and confident. The lyrics reveal the singer's personal history and his regrets about a lost love, but also his determination to face the future with courage and to preserve the memories of his childhood and his connection to the tango.
The imagery and the emotions expressed by the lyrics of "Ausencia" are typical of the genre of tango, which emerged in the early 20th century as a musical and cultural expression of the urban working class in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Carlos Gardel was one of the most famous and influential tango singers and composers of his time, and his songs are still popular today. "Ausencia" was composed in 1933, just a year before Gardel's tragic death in a plane crash in Colombia. The song is a testament to his artistry and his ability to capture the essence of the tango as a form of expression of the human soul.

Salga la orquesta marcando el compás

Playing this sad tango
Quiero contento escucharlo,
I want to listen to it happily
sentirlo y bailarlo
Feel it and dance to it
cantando su son.
Singing its sound
Vuelen sus notas buscando el amor
Its notes fly searching for love
que mi alegría soñó,
That my joy dreamed of
no son sus sones extraños,
Its sounds are not strange to me
porque hace veinte años conmigo nació.
Because it was born with me twenty years ago
Quiero esta noche escuchar tu melodía
Tonight I want to hear your melody
para reírme con vos hasta el final,
So that we can laugh together until the end
quiero matar sin piedad la pena mía;
I want to mercilessly kill my sadness
ya nunca más quiero ser sentimental.
I never want to be sentimental again
Siento el nostálgico ayer y todavía
I still feel the nostalgic past
quiero vivir mi niñez con su cristal.
I want to live my childhood again with its innocence

And my tango, with the soul of yesterday,
Oigo que me habla en sus lamentos.
I hear it talking to me in its laments
Yo que arrullé tu niñez

en la dulce quietud,
in the sweet stillness
quise brindarte después
I wanted to offer you later
una feliz juventud...
A happy youth...
Vos te alejaste del sol...
You moved away from the sun...
y en la noche fatal
And on that fateful night
equivocaste tu rol
You made a mistake in your role
entre la luz nocturnal.
Amidst the nocturnal light
Por eso tango, yo quiero que vos,
That's why tango, I want you
cuando me aleje de aquí,
When I go away from here
me acompañes con tus sones
To accompany me with your sounds
y los bandoneones
And the bandoneons
que giman por mí...
That will lament for me...
Si los violines quisieran llorar
If the violins wanted to cry

Desvelado tu ausencia me tiene
Your absence keeps me awake
padeciendo mi bien sin cesar
Suffering my well-being continuously
y tu nombre a mi memoria viene
And your name comes to my memory
recordándome más mi penar.
Reminding me more of my sorrow.
Es en vano llorar,
It's useless to cry,
nada calma el dolor
Nothing calms the pain
que atormenta a mi ser abatido
That torments my downhearted self
destrozando mi fiel corazón.
Destroying my faithful heart
Vuelve pronto, mitiga el quebranto,
Come back soon, alleviate the heartbreak,
que tu ausencia me mata, ¡ay de mí!
As your absence is killing me, oh me!
nadie seca el afligido llanto
No one dries the sorrowful tears
que mis ojos derraman por ti.
That my eyes shed for you.
Vago errante, sin fe,
Wandering aimlessly, without faith,
desafiando el dolor,
Defying the pain,
sin tener más amparo que el cielo
Without having more shelter than the sky,
y esperando que vuelva mi amor.
And waiting for my love to come back.
Mi pasión era tierna y es tierna
My passion was and is tender
y tú en cambio no sabes querer.
But in contrast, you don't know how to love.
¿Qué motivo te he dado, alma mía,
What reason have I given you, my soul,
para que así me hagas padecer?
That you make me suffer like this?
Es en vano llorar,
It's useless to cry,
nada calma el dolor
Nothing calms the pain,
que atormenta mi ser abatido
That torments my downhearted self.
destrozando mi trono de amor.
Destroying my throne of love.
