En su carrera profesional ha actuado en más de 25 telenovelas, las cuales han sido transmitidas en más de 60 países y traducidas a varios idiomas. También se ha desempeñado como animador y conductor en programas de TV, radio, actor de cine, teatro, y ha grabado más de 12 discos, los cuales han sido promocionados con giras musicales desde Canadá hasta la Patagonia, y en España, Italia y el norte de África. Mata es uno de los actores más populares de Latinoamérica.

En 1984 protagonizó la telenovela Cristal, la cual se convirtió en un evento televisivo en todo el mundo de habla hispana, rompiendo records de audiencia en casi todos los países en que ha sido transmitida, incluyendo algunos con alta población latina como Estados Unidos, España y Canadá. Esta novela, junto a las que siguieron como La dama de rosa, Señora y Las dos Dianas, lo llevó a ser catalogado como el hombre más popular de España en 1990.
