Weep No More
Carmen McRae and Dave Brubeck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You ain't gonna bother me no more
love goes just so far
woke up this morning
and found
i didn't care for you no more no how
never felt so good before
you're down to my size
it's over and done
so highness step down from your throne
that look in your eyes don't bother me none
can take you or leave you alone
from my window skies ain't gray no more
not now
here's the day that i've been waiting for
got only one heart
one heart with no spares
must save it for loving somebody who cares
so you ain't gonna bother me

no more
no more

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Carmen McRae's "No More" describe a turning point in a romantic relationship. The singer declares that their lover will no longer bother them because they have realized that their love only goes so far. They woke up one morning and found that they no longer cared for their lover in any way. This revelation has a positive effect on the singer as they never felt so good before. The singer's lover is now down to their size, and there is a sense of equality between them. The relationship is over and done, and the singer asks their lover, who was once highness on a throne, to step down from their pedestal. The look in their eyes no longer bothers the singer, and they can take them or leave them alone.

The singer is experiencing a newfound freedom, and this is reflected in the colorful imagery used in the lyrics. The skies outside their window are no longer gray, and the day they have been waiting for has arrived. The singer seems to have a newfound appreciation for their own heart and declares that they have only one heart with no spares. This indicates that they are no longer willing to waste their love on someone who does not care for them in the same way. In the end, the singer insists that their lover will no longer bother them, and they can move on to someone who truly cares for them.

In your eyes
Was the promise of the endless skies,
Now you say our love will die,
And you cry;
Weep no more!

Now our song
Is as mournful as the day is long,
Heavy as a million years,
Filled with tears,
Weep no more!

Let's relive our dreams
And forget those schemes
Of a world gone mad,
What we had let's have!

What was there for us,
Let's take care for us!
No, our love's not through,
It is born anew!

Weep no more,
For our hearts are through with love,
Can be filled anew with love,
Weep no more,
Weep no more!

WOW
Wonderful sounds from ( in my opinion ) the greatest female jazz vocalist of our era & the amazing Dave Brubeck Quartet.
Surely it can't get any better than this.
I have a vinyl copy of this album purchased in 1963 & although it has a fair amount of surface noise,i still play it regularly & enjoy it very much.

@Benn -- by "our era" do you mean the Sixties? there is a lot of great competition - Anita O'day, Sarah Vaughan, Sheila Jordan, Annie Ross ....
