In May 2007 Caro Emerald got a phonecall from Dutch producers Jan van Wieringen and David Schreurs. With another producer, they'd written a song for a Japanese pop act with the acclaimed songwriter Vince Degiorgio (Atomic Kitten, A-Teens, N'Synch, Love Inc. a.o.). But their demo singer couldn't make it. They needed something quickly, and that's how Caro got to record the demo of "Back It Up".
Caro liked the song so much that she added it to her live repertoire. A year later she got the chance to perform "Back It Up" on local TV station AT5 in Amsterdam. It caught on right away: viewers just wouldn't stop calling and e-mailing about that lovely girl with her catchy song. Caro and a friend produced a no budget video which ended up on Youtube, and again, the response was overwhelming. People literally begged her to sell the song on iTunes.
But with only one song on the repertoire, Caro and her team decided to focus on a full album first. Inspired by films and music from the 40's and 50's they started working on new songs and ideas. Fall 2008, David flew over to Toronto to write with Degiorgio, and returned with 7 great tracks and a clear direction for the album. A few months later, Vince came to Amsterdam to finish the album. The result: an exciting and hugely accessible record, featuring ballroom jazz, cinematic tangoes, groovin' jazz tracks and infectious mambo's that sound like they were recorded in 1951 in Hollywood's most famous recording studios. But the smoking beats, catchy songs and inventive production tell it's actually 2009 that Caro Emerald is putting her name on the map.

And something has me really turning red
I toss and then I turn inside this bed, oh yeah
Yeah, I said it
I'm unsatisfied
With all the Romeos and their goodbyes
Their 'See ya later's incomplete the lies
That's why I sigh
It's not just me I talk about
Our age is on the way
All the money in the women's world will never make him change
Gonna grab the yellow pages
Find a Davinci of the threads
To dress me up and make me look like someone else instead
It's time for my rehearsal, the ultimate reversal
You see, I've got a plan
I'm coming back as a man
I'm gonna wear blue
And find a pair of flat black leather shoes
That shine more than a diamond mine could do
And add something new
Like wear a cologne
That says you are the man I'm gonna own
And whispers "baby, will you take me home?"
Va va va va va voom
I drop a hint and then my keys
And then I'll cast a net
To catch someone who's in for such a night he won't forget
Gonna grab the yellow pages
Find a Da Vinci of the threads
To dress me up and make me look like someone else instead
It's time for my rehearsal, the ultimate reversal
You see, I've got a plan
I'm coming back as a man
I'll hide behind the Errol Flynn moustache
Remove the false impression to make sure the feeling lasts
Call me the equalizer for the girls
And tell me baby, tell me where it hurts
Gonna grab the yellow pages
Find a Davinci of the threads
To dress me up and make me look like someone else instead
It's time for my rehearsal, the ultimate reversal
You see, I've got a plan
I'm coming back as a man
The song "Coming Back As a Man" by Caro Emerald is a catchy, upbeat tune about feeling unsatisfied with the typical romantic relationships offered to women in society. The first verse mentions the singer's restlessness and discontent with the current state of affairs. She's tired of the empty promises and lies from men who are unable to commit. The second verse expands on the issue by suggesting that all women are affected by it, and that even money can't change the male behavior.
The chorus then describes the singer's plan to switch things up by becoming a man herself. She wants to dress the part, wear cologne, and hint at her attraction to catch a man who's up for a night he won't forget. The bridge of the song takes it up a notch by mentioning the "Errol Flynn mustache" and the singer's willingness to be the "equalizer for the girls." The song ends on a triumphant note, with the singer's declaration that she's coming back as a man.
Overall, the song seeks to flip the script on traditional gender roles in relationships, suggesting that women are tired of waiting for men to step up and are ready to take control themselves. The lyrics are both empowering and playful, with the singer's confidence shining through as she plans her transformation.
