In May 2007 Caro Emerald got a phonecall from Dutch producers Jan van Wieringen and David Schreurs. With another producer, they'd written a song for a Japanese pop act with the acclaimed songwriter Vince Degiorgio (Atomic Kitten, A-Teens, N'Synch, Love Inc. a.o.). But their demo singer couldn't make it. They needed something quickly, and that's how Caro got to record the demo of "Back It Up".
Caro liked the song so much that she added it to her live repertoire. A year later she got the chance to perform "Back It Up" on local TV station AT5 in Amsterdam. It caught on right away: viewers just wouldn't stop calling and e-mailing about that lovely girl with her catchy song. Caro and a friend produced a no budget video which ended up on Youtube, and again, the response was overwhelming. People literally begged her to sell the song on iTunes.
But with only one song on the repertoire, Caro and her team decided to focus on a full album first. Inspired by films and music from the 40's and 50's they started working on new songs and ideas. Fall 2008, David flew over to Toronto to write with Degiorgio, and returned with 7 great tracks and a clear direction for the album. A few months later, Vince came to Amsterdam to finish the album. The result: an exciting and hugely accessible record, featuring ballroom jazz, cinematic tangoes, groovin' jazz tracks and infectious mambo's that sound like they were recorded in 1951 in Hollywood's most famous recording studios. But the smoking beats, catchy songs and inventive production tell it's actually 2009 that Caro Emerald is putting her name on the map.
Pack Up the Louie

The cop rings and it's half past eleven
Can't believe it but the time just flies
Soon I'll be on a cruise into heaven
Hearin' stories and 1000 lies
About the things that I'd never do
Experience that I don't have
Gotta get it, gotta do it fast
Gotta grab a piece of paper, I wish I could find my pen
What am I taking you? What am I waited for?
I gotta pack, gotta pack up the Louie
And I can't leave a thing behind
Gotta pack, gotta pack up the Louie
For every different change of mind
I got a pocket for every reason
Every season be another day
I gotta pack, gotta pack up the Louie
I love my Louie when I go away
Louie, Louie, Louie, pack up the Louie
We're gonna I pack it up every day
Louie, Louie, Louie, pack up the Louie
Lock it up and we're on our way
Louie, Louie, Louie, pack up the Louie
Pack it up, we're on our way
Louie, Louie, Louie, pack up the Louie
Louie, Louie, Louie, pack up the Louie
First stop is gonna be Buenos Aires
Tango listener all night long
Two days and we're heading off to Rio
Kind of running from morning 'til dawn
Then I'll slumber as queen senorita
Do Havana down the emerald way
But before I get on the line
Some gotta go, some gotta stay
So I brought a piece of paper, tear it out of my cahier
Next time, I'm not hesitating
I think I'm leaving today
I gotta pack, gotta pack up the Louie
And I can't leave a thing behind
Gotta pack, gotta pack up the Louie
For every different change of mind
I got a pocket for every reason
Every season be another day
I gotta pack, gotta pack up the Louie
I love my Louie when I go away
All aboard, Buenos Aired, Rio de Janeiro, Havana and the Emerald way
I gotta get to Cameron too
And 19 of the west side
Is there a boat somewhere?
From 18 to spare
Can you help little me?
Got that spark, you know, spark in the air
I gotta pack, gotta pack up the Louie
And I can't leave a thing behind
Gotta pack, gotta pack up the Louie
For every different change of mind
I got a pocket for every reason
Every season be another day
I gotta pack, gotta pack up the Louie
I love my Louie when I go away
Louie, Louie, Louie, pack up the Louie
We're gonna I pack it up every day
Louie, Louie, Louie, pack up the Louie
Lock it up and we're on our way
Louie, Louie, Louie, pack up the Louie
Pack it up, we're on our way
Louie, Louie, Louie, pack up the Louie
And I'm the Louie, we're on our way
The lyrics to Caro Emerald's song "Pack Up the Louie" depict the singer's excitement for an upcoming cruise, but with a sense of urgency and anxiety to make sure she doesn't forget anything. The opening verse reveals that it's already late, and the singer can't believe how quickly time has flown by. She's eager to embark on a journey filled with new experiences, but also acknowledges that some of these experiences might be uncomfortable or out of her comfort zone. She uses the metaphor of the "big Queen Mary" to visually portray herself as the captain of her own journey, who has to navigate through uncharted waters.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the importance of packing and being prepared for every possible scenario. The singer has "a pocket for every reason" and loves her "Louie" (presumably a reference to her luggage) because it helps her feel organized and in control. She sings that she can't leave anything behind and has to be ready for "every different change of mind." This suggests that the singer might be indecisive or unsure of what she wants, but is determined to make sure that she has all her options open.
The second verse outlines some of the specific locations the singer will be visiting on her trip, including Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and Havana. She mentions that she'll be listening to tango in Buenos Aires and then moving on to Rio for more adventure. The lyrics also suggest that the singer might have some unfinished business in Cameron and the west side, and is seeking out new opportunities to find that "spark in the air."
Overall, the lyrics to "Pack Up the Louie" convey a sense of wanderlust and eagerness for new experiences, as well as a desire to be prepared for every possible outcome.
