I Thought About You
Carol Sloane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Seems that I read, or somebody said
That out of sight is out of mind
Maybe that's so but I tried to go
And leave you behind, what did I find

I took a trip on the train
And I thought about you,
I passed a shadowy lane
And I thought about you,

Two or three cars parked under the stars
A winding stream
Moon shining down on some little town
And with each beam, same old dream

At every stop that we made
Oh, I thought about you
But when I pulled down the shade
Then I really felt blue,

I peeked through the crack
And looked at the track
The one going back to you

And what did I do
I thought about you

Overall Meaning

The song "I Thought About You" by Carol Sloane talks about a love that happens to haunt her even when she's far away from her lover. The lyrics start with the line "Seems that I read or somebody said that out of sight is out of mind, maybe that's so, but I tried to go and leave you behind, what did I find." This suggests that the common idiom "out of sight, out of mind" doesn't seem to apply in her case because she has tried to forget about the person but couldn't. The next lines describe her train ride, where she passes a shadowy lane and sees two or three cars parked under the stars, a winding stream, and the moon shining down on some little town, all of which make her think about her lover back home. She feels the same old dream with each beam of moonlight, suggesting that she's not over her lover.

The chorus goes, "At every stop that we made, oh, I thought about you, but when I pulled down the shade, then I really felt blue. I peeked through the crack and looked at the track, the one going back to you, and what did I do? I thought about you." These lines reinforce the idea that she can't get her lover off her mind. Even though she tries to pull the shade and shut out thoughts of her lover, she can't help but think about them, especially when she sees the track going back to where her lover is. As much as she tries to forget this person, she finds that they are never too far away from her thoughts.
