Child of Mine
Carole King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Although you see the world
Different than me
Sometimes I can touch upon
The wonders that you see
And all the new colors
And pictures you've designed

Oh, yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine
Child of mine
Child of mine
Oh, yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

You don't need directions
You know which way to go
And I don't want to hold you back
I just want to watch you grow
You're the one who taught me
You don't have to look behind

Oh, yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine
Child of mine
Child of mine
Oh, yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Nobody's gonna kill your dreams
Or tell you how to live your life
There'll always be people to make it hard for a while
But you'll change their heads when they see you smile

The times you were born in
May not have been the best
But you can make the times to come
Better than the rest
I know you will be honest
If you can't always be kind

Oh, yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine
Child of mine
Child of mine
Oh, yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine
Child of mine

Oh, yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Overall Meaning

In โ€œChild of Mine,โ€ Carole King sings to her child and describes how she embraces the way that her child sees the world, even if it is different from her perspective. She acknowledges the beauty of her childโ€™s creativity and imagination, and emphasizes how much she cherishes her child.

The lyrics also convey the motherโ€™s sense of pride in her childโ€™s independence and ability to find her own way in life, affirming that she will support her child in her journey of growth and development. King assures her child that she trusts her to make her own decisions and mistakes, and reminds her that there will always be people who may try to bring her down, but that she can conquer any obstacle with a positive attitude and a strong will.

Overall, "Child of Mine" is a touching and sentimental expression of a motherโ€™s love for her child, a hopeful and encouraging message to help her child face whatever challenges may come her way, and an acknowledgement of the sheer joy and honor of having a child in oneโ€™s life.

Oh yes, sweet darlin' so glad you are a child of mine. So glad. He is the greatest son a mom could ever have in her life.

9/23/22. My mom had always says this was her song to me. I played and sang this song as we removed life support and with the final note she took her last breath.

You were her absolute favorite artist and as they were attempting to save her life and the hours afterwards I played your music for her to keep her close. Thank you for all the joy you gave my mom.
