Crying In The Rain
Carole King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll never let you see
The way my broken heart is hurting me
I've got my pride and I know how to hide
All the sorrow and pain
I'll do my crying in the rain

If I wait for cloudy skies
You won't know the rain from the tears in my eyes
You'll never know that I still love you
So though the heartaches remain
I'll do my crying in the rain

Raindrops falling from heaven
Will never wash away my misery
But since we're not together
I'll wait for stormy weather
To hide these tears I hope you'll never see

Someday when my crying's done
I'm gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun
I may be a fool
But till then, darling, you'll never see me complain
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll do my crying in the rain

I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll do my crying in the rain

Overall Meaning

"Crying in the Rain" is a song that explores the aftermath of a broken relationship. Carole King, the writer, is telling her former lover that she will never let him see her broken heart or her tears. She wants to bury her heartache, hide her pain, and overcome her feelings in privacy. King speaks of her pride and ability to hold her emotions and sorrow within. She will wait for a time when the skies are cloudy, for this is the best time to hide the tears from falling rain, as no one can tell the difference between the raindrops and her tears. King adds that the raindrops that fall from heaven will never wash away the pain and sadness she feels because she is not with her lover.

The chorus is like a hidden confession where King admits that she still loves him, but she has to wait for stormy weather to come when she is alone so she can cry without being seen. She intends to keep her hurt away from her former lover's sight. She convinces herself that she can do this because someday the rain will stop falling, and she will be okay. She will triumph over her emotions and move on with a smile. King understands that this might be foolish, but she perseveres in the belief that her dignity is intact.

For a young songwriter to give this song to the hit making Everly Brothers machine, must have been a boatload of royalties!

Mr. Mile, Hi

The everly Brothers did a fine job of this but I love this demo best. It is the only one written by Carole King and Howard Greenfield. He is the guy that wrote all the hit songs with Neil sedaka.

So beautiful.

I think this demo should have been released. It's as good as Might As Rain Until September.

Mary Lynn Johnson-Kerker

My favorite song of all time...by the Everly's
