I Feel the Earth Move
Carole King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel the Earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumblin' down
I feel my heart start to tremblin'
Whenever you're around

Ooh, baby, when I see your face
Mellow as the month of May
Oh, darlin', I can't stand it
When you look at me that way

I feel the Earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumblin' down
I feel my heart start to tremblin'
Whenever you're around

Ooh, darlin', when you're near me
And you tenderly call my name
I know that my emotions
Are somethin' I just can't tame
I've just got to have you, baby
Uh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh, yeah

I feel the Earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumblin' down, a-tumblin' down
I feel the Earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumblin' down, a-tumblin' down

I just lose control
Down to my very soul
I get hot and cold
All over, all over, all over, all over

I feel the Earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumblin' down, a-tumblin' down
I feel the Earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumblin' down, a-tumblin' down

A-tumblin' down, a-tumblin' down
A-tumblin' down, tumblin' down

Overall Meaning

The song "I Feel the Earth Move" by Carole King was released in 1971 and quickly became a hit, reaching the second spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song is a passionate love song about the intense feelings that arise when the object of one's affection is close by. The opening lyrics "I feel the Earth move under my feet" describe the physical sensations the singer experiences when her love interest is around. The feeling of the earth moving under her feet is a metaphor for the intense emotions she feels.

The second line "I feel the sky tumblin' down" reinforces the idea that the singer's world is turned upside down when her love interest is near. The image of the sky tumbling down suggests chaos and unpredictability. The line "I feel my heart start to tremblin'" further emphasizes the physical effects that love has on the body. The trembling heart is a classic symbol of passion and indicates that the singer is overcome with desire.

When the singer sees her lover's face, she describes it as "Mellow as the month of May." This is a metaphor for the calming and soothing effect the love interest has on her. The metaphor gives the impression that the singer's entire world is a happier and more peaceful place because of her lover's presence.

The chorus repeats the opening lines and emphasizes how the singer physically reacts when her love interest is near. The line "I just lose control, down to my very soul" reinforces the idea that the singer is overwhelmed by her emotions and cannot control her feelings any longer.

As a Black teen girl this was my first album purchase. I admired her songwriting skills, vocals and she could play the piano! I would sashay around the living room with the brush/broom - as a mic - singing all of her songs. All the while… envisioning Carole accompanying me on the piano- the sofa. Always, thanks for the memories!

This was my mothers favorite song. When she was ill with Alzheimer's and we would play this song for her she would dance and mouth the words and she was like the person she was before.
