Got the Farm Land Blues
Carolina Tar Heels Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I woke up this morning, between one and two
Woke up this morning, between one and two
Heard a chicken squalling, down at my chicken roost

I rushed down there, but a little too late
I rushed down there, but a little too late
Thief had got my chickens, and made his get-away
Went out to my corn crib, for to get some corn
Went out to my corn crib, for to get some corn
Thief had broke in my corn crib, took away every ear of my corn

Went to get my car, for to go get the sheriff
Went to get my car, for to go get the sheriff
Thief had took every tire, right off of my car

SPOKEN: Hard luck

Well, along come a storm, tore down my corn
Along come a storm, tore down my corn
While the bean beetle in the bean patch, eatin' up the beans,
Boll weevil in the cotton, he's tearin' up the bolls

Got the farm land blues, got the farm land blues right now
Got the farm land blues, got the farm land blues right now
Not another fur-, row will I plow

Gonna sell my farm, gonna move to town

Gonna sell my farm, gonna move to town
Got the farm land blues, right now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Carolina Tar Heels’ song, “Got the Farm Land Blues,” highlight the challenges of life on a farm. The singer of the song wakes up in the middle of the night to find that his chickens have been stolen by a thief. He rushes to his corn crib to get some corn, only to find that the thief has taken every ear of corn. Frustrated, the singer tries to go get the sheriff, only to find that the thief has stolen every tire off of his car.

As the song continues, the singer’s luck only gets worse. A storm comes and tears down his corn, while the bean beetle eats up his beans and the boll weevil destroys his cotton. All of these setbacks lead the singer to declare that he has “got the farm land blues” and that he’s going to sell his farm and move to town.

Overall, the song paints a bleak picture of life on a farm, where hard work can be easily undone by bad luck and the actions of others. However, the song also shows the determination and resilience of those who work the land, as the singer refuses to give up despite the many setbacks he faces.
