Jumpship
Caroline's Spine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

i spend alot of time wishing i was someone else
and i wish i could face the world that presents itself,
but when i feel my heartbeat slowly fade away
and i see no reason to stay i jumpship.

you spend alot of time wishing you were in love with someone else
'cause when your lover does you wrong
you place the blame on yourself
how you gonna fly with a wheel chained to the ground?
when i see no reason to hang around i jumpship.

we spend alot of time wishing we had grown up somewhere else
because our mommys and daddys
were not always mums and daddys themselves.
how you gonna walk,

how you gonna talk?
like hell we're gonna learn to jumpship

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Caroline's Spine's song "Jumpship" speak to the idea of escape; the longing to escape one's current circumstances in favor of something better. The first verse touches on the feelings of inadequacy that plague many of us; the sense that we are somehow not good enough, that we don't quite fit in. The singer of the song fantasizes about being someone else, but ultimately he is unable to face the realities of the world around him. Instead, he chooses to "jumpship", to abandon his current situation entirely.

The second verse deals with the pain of unrequited love. The singer of this verse blames himself for his lover's infidelities, and he longs to be with someone else. But just like the first verse, he is unable to escape his current situation. He compares himself to a bird with a chained wheel attached to his leg, unable to take flight.

The final verse moves away from personal relationships and towards family dynamics. The singer laments the fact that they were not raised in a more ideal household, and wonders how they will ever learn to "walk" and "talk" properly. Despite all of this, however, the singer is determined not to "jumpship". They resolve to stay and fight for a better life, rather than running away from their problems.
