The Gate
Caroline Polachek Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Standing at the gate
I come here every day
Just to see your face
Just to hear you say
There's no need to wait
We will be okay
'Cause finally there's a way
To be both free and safe

Overall Meaning

In Caroline Polachek's song "The Gate," the singer is longing for someone who offers them both freedom and safety. Standing at the gate every day, the singer eagerly awaits the opportunity to see the person's face and hear their reassuring words. The lyrics suggest that the relationship is a source of security and comfort for the singer. The repeated phrase "We will be okay" signifies a strong sense of trust and reliance between the two individuals. The singer finds contentment and peace within this relationship that allows them to be free, while still feeling safe.

Moreover, the imagery of the gate in the song serves as a metaphor for the threshold between the past and future. The singer is eagerly looking towards the future with their partner, feeling safe to take risks and engage in a relationship that offers them both support and autonomy. The lyrics suggest that the relationship is a pathway to a new way of living, one where the singer can both be authentic to themselves and avoid feeling confined.

Not like I'm counting the days
But it's been three-sixty-five
You're out there killing the game
And damn, I love you tonight

And I'm out in the ether, you're singing your song
I cry on the ascend, it's so encompassing
Please sing me refrains, your song is the cure
'Cause your tones, they are matching my feelings

I am a little lonely
Can't even get close to me
You're the only one I want to hear now
So pure, you're strumming my heart strings
I love you

0:00 - 1:55 Predominantly So Hot Youā€™re hurting my feelings with ā€œthe Gateā€ background music

1:55 - 3:45 Both Gate (lyrics) and continued humming of ā€œSo Hot youā€™re hurting my Feelingsā€

3:45 - 5:30 - Some chimes (maybe from parachute?) and ā€œGateā€

5:30 - 6:20 Gate and continued humming of ā€œSo Hot youā€™re hurting my Feelingsā€

6:20 - 6:50 - Gate and Humming continues, but a feature from Parachute. (The 1:38 part of Parachute to be exact)

6:50 - 7:00 - Ocean sounds, presumably to match ocean of tears and all the previous

7:00 - 7:55 : Gate, mostly

7:55 - 8:15 : canā€™t make out what this vocal extract is from, I think it may be parachute but it may be an addition?

8:15 - 9:08 - Mostly Door

9:08 - back to humming so hot your hurting my feelings

So yeah, I think thatā€™s all the time stamps. Sounds about right because all the songs I mentioned were released as singles to Pang :)

Dancingheart622

Yes! I love listening to pop songs with humming, shouting, and binaural beats. Her and Grimes are my go to people for that kind of music. They really have helped me relieve physical and emotional pain :D . I guess their stuff could be considered trance music. I haven't meditated to her music before, but I have to Grimes (Halfaxa album) and it works. I'll try this out next.
