Solitaire
Carpenters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was a man, a lonely man
Who lost his love through his indifference
A heart that cared, that went unchecked
Until it died in his silence

And solitaire's the only game in town
And every road that takes him, takes him down
And by himself, it's easy to pretend
He'll never love again

And keeping to himself he plays the game
Without her love it always ends the same
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire

A little hope, goes up in smoke
Just how it goes, goes without saying
There was a man, a lonely man
Who would command the hand he's playing

And solitare's the only game in town
And every road that takes him, takes him down
And by himself it's easy to pretend
He'll never love again

And keeping to himself he plays the game
Without her love it always ends the same
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire

And solitare's the only game in town
And every road that takes him, takes him down

While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Solitaire" tell the story of a man who has lost the love of his life because he was indifferent to her. He realizes too late that he had a heart that cared, but he never expressed it, and now it's too late. The man is now lonely, and the only game he plays is solitaire. He pretends that he will never love again, and he keeps to himself, playing the game, while life goes on around him.

The heartbreak and isolation of this man are conveyed through the use of the card game, solitaire. It's a game that one plays alone, just like how the man is alone. He has lost everything, and the only game he has left is solitaire. The lyricist uses this game as a metaphor for the man's life, highlighting his loneliness and emptiness. The phrase, "every road that takes him, takes him down" emphasizes the fact that the man is going through a lot of difficult emotions, and he feels like he's going down a dark path.

Wrong lyrics shown. Correct ones --- Happy by Carpenters

I've played the game of love before.
Too young to know
How hard the fall could be;
I never thought I'd try again.
Somehow you brought
The gambler out in me.

You can deal me in this time around.
Even though the odds are high,
We'll play them down.
You may be a chance I need to take,
And the hand I'm holdin' says it's no mistake.

Happy is the way I'm feelin',
And I know it comes from being with you.
All at once my life is changin',
And I know it's 'cause I'm fallin' in love with you.
Fallin' in love with you.
Fallin' in love.
Fallin' in love with you.

If this is luck then let it ride.
If it's the starts,
They're surely on my side.
I've never been so safisfied
By love before;
For all the times I've tried.

These beginnings could mean more
Than the brief affair I bargained for.
Little did I know, when we began,
That my time had come to win a hand.

Happy is the way I'm feelin',
And I know it comes from being with you.
All at once my life is changin',
And I know it's 'cause I'm fallin' in love with you.
Fallin' in love with you.
Fallin' in love.
Fallin' in love with you.

Please forgive me if I seem
To be walking through a waking dream.
Laughter never came so easily;
There's a freedom here that's new to me.

Happy is the way I'm feelin',
And I know it comes from being with you.
All at once my life is changin',
And I know it's 'cause I'm fallin' in love with you.
Fallin' in love with you.
Fallin' in love.
Fallin' in love with you.
