If You Love Me
Carr Vikki Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I said I needed you
You said you would always stay
It wasn't me who changed but you and now you've gone away
Don't you see that now you've gone
And I'm left here on my own
That I have to follow you and beg you to come home

You don't have to say you love me just be close at hand
You don't have to stay forever I will understand
Believe me, believe me I can't help but love you
But believe me I'll never tie you down
Left alone with just a memory
Life seems dead and quite unreal
All that's left is loneliness there's nothing left to feel

You don't have to say you love me just be close at hand
You don't have to stay forever
I will understand believe me, believe me
You don't have to say you love me just be close at hand

You don't have to stay forever
I will understand, believe me, believe me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Carr Vikki's song You Don't Have To Say You Love Me reveal a bittersweet love story. The singer tells the person they love that they do not have to say they love them to remain close, nor do they have to stay forever. The words suggest that the singer has been hurt by the person they love, who seems to have changed his or her mind about their relationship. Although the singer still loves this person, they have come to accept that they cannot force them to stay.

In the first verse, the singer sings of how they once needed the person they love, only to have that person leave them behind. The use of the words "follow" and "beg" suggests a sense of desperation, as if the singer is willing to do whatever it takes to win back the love of this person. In the second verse, the singer admits that life without their loved one is "dead" and "quite unreal." However, they try to frame their love in a way that does not feel overpowering, by saying that they will never "tie you down."

The chorus repeats the message that the person the singer loves does not have to say they love them, and that the singer will still understand. The word "believe" is used twice in the chorus, which further conveys a sense of uncertainty or vulnerability on the part of the singer.

Overall, the lyrics of You Don't Have To Say You Love Me are a poignant reminder that love is not always straightforward or easy. The song captures the often-contradictory emotions of loving and letting go, and the challenge of finding a balance between the two.

If the sun should tumble from the sky
If the sea should suddenly run dry
If you love me, really love me
Let it happen, I won't care

If it seems that everything is lost
I should smile and never count the cost
If you love me, really love me
Let it happen, darling, I won't care

Shall I catch a shooting star?
Shall I bring it where you are?
If you want me to, I will
You can set me any task
I'll do anything you ask
If you'll only love me still

When at last our life on earth is through
I shall share eternity with you
If you love me, really love me
Then whatever happens, I won't care

Then whatever happens, I won't care

I became a huge fan when I saw her first time on the Tom Jones tv show. Loved the voice, loved the lady. Still do some 50 years later.
