When Carrie was young she started out learning the organ, graduated to the piano, and played her way through a music degree at the University of Alberta. It wasn’t until later that she discovered the beauty of creating song through voice and guitar. Self-taught with both, she considers herself to be a bit of a hack, especially relative to the amount of time she spent working to perfect her classical piano skills. Despite this, she has cultivated a sound that works: allowing simple harmony to be the backbone for lyrical melodies. Though she loves the piano, playing classical music, and writing on the piano every now and then, there is something she finds very intimate and soothing about the guitar: the way it feels, the way it resonates, the way it blends with other instruments and voice. And it’s far easier to pack around!
Her repertoire ranges from the delicate love song, to the silly little ditty, to the powerful and profound. Carrie’s lovely voice and sensitive style draw the listener into the snapshot images she creates with her lyrics.
In 2005, Carrie released her debut recording Pieces of Me; a collection of songs inspired by her excessive journal writing. In April 2008 she released her second recording, Finding Grace; a collection of songs that reflect her attempts at love and poetry.

This is in response to the live streaming Q&A. One person made some insightful comments. I tried to respond, but, being technically inept, I failed miserably. I wanted to say two things. One, I believe that each model of music therapy has its own strength, and thus each adds to the field a richness that allows us to serve our clients more completely. Second, while using music within health care and social services is not the sole domain of music therapy, I believe a trained music therapist brings unique qualities and skills to the work. As well, it is our speciality -so we have a broader base of knowledge and skill to use in our therapeutic interactions.
