Im 28 and I had this conversation with my mother.
I told her I understand the way you play life as this is culture learned from the generation before you.
But also told her, it doesn’t have to be so as you are not always right.
Just as I, younger than she, know I am still learning and can’t be dull to new lessons and ways to experience them.
There are pillars in life to abide by like respect which maintains the foundation of humanity and how one deals with the next person, paving the pathway for mutual exchange of ideas and so forth.
I told her the time spent in ignorance or unwillingness is time deprived of exchanging the old wisdom with the new experiences( elders to youth ) and in turn robbing the next generation in charge of an even better living, more grounded experience in life,

But hey. Our elders are gonna do what they feel.
I do as I must.
Hopefully those after me, do what is right.

Over time we fall back on the wisdom given to us no matter the age.
This is what the elderly do out of experience.
This is what children do out of naivety.
This is what the generations in between has to gauge with a bit of skepticism to mold into a proper form when it’s their time to make it better for the up and coming.

Exactly. I mean saying no outright is somehow, but as one grows he/she must make their own decisions, which most rational parents realize. Given, with the advice of others, but it is up to him/her to decide where to work, who to marry, their children, etc. It is more of a problem when the parents' decisions backfire, rather than having such embarrassing situations, I'd rather open up to my children's insight so I can also make guided decisions as well. I’m a younger Millennial and I think what parents fail to realise is that they are raising children based on a world that doesn’t exist anymore. Culturally, I will always show respect to my elders, but if you talk to me in a way that is rude and unwarranted, then I’ve lost my respect for you, sorry. I believe when you value your child’s thoughts/feelings and learn to take accountability (cause parents aren’t perfect) then your child will automatically respect you. My Dad is very strict but very fair - he always listens to my brother and I and acknowledges our personhood, our feelings, emotions, and thoughts as young people navigating this world. The way my parents grew up is very different to how I grew up. My Dad was born and raised in Senegal in the 1950’s and I was born and raised in Australia in the 90’s. He could not raise my brother and I as if we were living in the 50’s in Senegal, but he did make sure to teach us Senegalese values and cultural practices. As long it’s not something destructive or bad, then humans should retain some of the old, and learn to accept some of the new. Change is inevitable - you either get with it or get left behind.

Not their fault, in forming years their brains were traumatised and forced to stop thinking critically and challenging what they personally found to be wrong in this world. Cognitively today, that's the only way they know to process a challenging idea. Shut it down, regardless of the outcome. I think slavery and colonisations found a fertile terrain in West Africa because of these ingrained societal behaviours. Other cultures and civilizations fought and continue to fight oppression very harshly and very often through violence. The elders grew up not having a mind of their own so they expect the younger generation to do the same. They call it disrespectful when you disagree with their opinion because to the elders it’s signalling to them that their lifestyle is wrong. If I greeted you as a form of respect and good manners I would expect a greeting back, however if you just look me up and down and ignore me that is disrespectful making respect only one sided.

Even in the case of the video,actively listening to someone's opinions even if you disagree creates an atmosphere where both parties feel valued and acknowledged.

I am an “elder” and what I see among my peers is their experience is rooted in negativity. Most elders have a negative bias about life- they lost their child like joy and wonder due to their “experience”. This demand for respect from the younger generation is rooted in their ego and need for control as they age. Great conversation. Hats off to the entire panel. As a Gen X raised in the Caribbean. I can relate & I enjoyed this conversation. To the youths nuff respect, I totally agree with your reponses. Elders, i hear you, as an elder myself. I have to say, time changes and so do men. The bible was written years ago. As a christian elder myself, there are many things i have to question now as i could not have questioned my elders back then. Let us keep in mind that as women & morher, I had to suppress a lot as a Gen X while pregnant, my child, who is a Millennial, felt all of that suppression for 9 mths. Now tell me, how else do i expect her to behave after the 9 mth.
This child is my voice today. Her courage & tolerance level can not compare to mine. The things that I tolerated when I was pregnant, my daughter, does not now that she is an adult. It was a challenge making her so as i say & teaching her how i was taught. I had to step back and ask many questions & unlearn alot and allowed her to explain her behavior and responses. Something i was not allowed to do. It was not easy unlearning and understanding. But i now see & and yes,😢 youths respect should and must be earned.

- many elders demand respect not because they uphold it as a value, but because of their own ego and resentment. They couldn’t stand up to their own elders, which caused anger and resentment. Now they’re taking that anger and pouring it out on the generation after them. It’s an “if I suffer, you too must suffer” mentality
- I agree that the younger generations can be extreme sometimes, especially when it comes to morality. But there’s a reason for that - many of us watched our parents and elders suffer in silence, in the name of “morality”. Many of us also watched our parents twist and bend morality when it was convenient. Like the Gen Z girl said, many elders have a warped and hypocritical view of morality. For example, a man is physically abusing his wife and kids, but the wife is expected to stay with him because “a good woman keeps her home”? That’s an extreme example, but how about when our parents tell us to lie for them when they don’t want ti see someone? “Tell her I’m sleeping” “tell him I’m not at home” Or when they act respectfully to their own elders but talk badly about them behind their backs?
- Sometimes, what the elders call morality is just fear and people pleasing. Their reasoning for doing or not doing something isn’t their conscience, but fear about “what will people say”. They need to acknowledge that sometimes we don’t uphold morality because some of us didn’t have great or truly moral parents, so we didn’t see it modeled for us correctly. Their morality was built on shame, and our new generation is a shameless generation
- Age can bring wisdom, but age alone does not determine wisdom. Even the Yoruba culture acknowledges that with the term “agbaya”, which means “old fool”. You can be old and foolish; they’re not mutually exclusive. Btw what many older people call “wisdom” is just culture and tradition

Yes, you’re right! think it’s ego and resentment too. If you’ve been a horrible man or woman your entire life, then you don’t deserve my respect. I’ll respect you based on your actions towards others. And ‘elders’ seem to be claiming that title younger and younger, because I definitely wouldn’t classify either of the women on the panel as elders. Seems people just want to be in a position where they can finally tell others what to do, act how they want to act, and not be accountable for it.

It's giving boarding school mentality. When I attended FGGC, my classmates claimed they had the right to do what seniors did to them to the juniors coming. They even dealt with some naive SS1 who just came 😂😂😂. It's the entitlement to claim something from people who don't owe you anything because some people took something from you before. the women were not all just walking around with their “chest bare.” certain tribes in more rural situations did but for the most part african ppl definitely wore clothes, plenty photographs display that. you ppl love applying the noble savage trope to your ancestors, women’s bodies was sexualized back then as well (they’ve been since the beginning of humankind) & the concept of modesty doesn’t come from europe, it’s a common idea on morality and ethics that a lot of different cultures have independently came to (although to varying different forms)

@@Daniella1117 yes they have, it’s you that don’t know what you’re talking about. it largely depends on the exact culture that’s being talked about because in some ancient cultures nudity wasn’t necessarily associated with sexuality but alongside those there have always been cultures that throughout mankind’s history have associated the human body with sexuality (i’d say the vast majority of them). if you subscribe to christianity, only time they haven’t ever was in the time of adam and eve where no one knew what nakedness was; asides that sexual symbolism and imagery has always been present in various forms of ancient art, literature, and cultural practices across different societies since forever

There's an additional element of patriarchal control stemming from religion but that's another comment for another day. If men didn't lack self control, women would be able to walk around bare-chested like men do without getting sexualized or possibly assaulted for it.

There’s some points that Zia made that are so underrated. I can’t believe that they breezed through the statement about how a lot of young pearls basically need two-three things bringing you income just to stay afloat.

Life wasn’t a bed of roses for boomers, but they definitely had it better. And I think that they should acknowledge that first.
