One More Day
Caruso Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Business friends
I have only known this amazing, amazing man and his unique daughter for a few months
I don't even know how many
I'd have to check my pay stubs
But, as my guru Otho always says
Day-O!

What?

What's going on Delia?
Are you alright?

Um, I-I am so sorry
I don't-I don't know what just happened
I meant to say
Me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day-o

Delia?
Do you need to lie down?

No! No, I just need to

Daylight come and me wan' go home

What is happening to me?

Maxie

Yes?

On behalf of Delia and myself, I'd just like to say

Work all night on a drink of rum

Daylight come and me wan' go home

Stack banana 'til the morning come, brrah

Daylight come and me wan' go home
Day, me say day o
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Come mister tally man, tally me banana

Daylight come and me wan' go home

Come mister tally man, tally me banana

Daylight come and me wan' go home

Lydia
Call 9-1-1
Wait, why aren't you dancing?

It's like I told you dad
This house is haunted
And the ghosts who live here
Want you out
Barbara, the pig

Who wants bacon?!

No! No! I'm a vegan

A beautiful bunch of ripe banana

Daylight come and me wan' go home

Hide the deadly black tarantula

Daylight come and me wan' go home

Lift six foot, seven foot, eight foot bunch
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Six foot, seven foot, eight foot bunch
Daylight come and me wan' go home

Maxie
Please, forgive me
If I had known

Chuck, you moron! Don't apologize! We're gonna be rich

What?

What?

I was never gonna invest in your stupid "gated community"
But a genuine haunted house?
It's a goldmine

No

Do you hear that Delia?
These ghosts are gonna make us a fortune

No, you're supposed to be scared

Lydia, we're so sorry
It didn't work

There's one thing that can still stop him

Lydia, no
You don't know what will happen

I can't keep living like this
Betelgeuse

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy
I'm so glad you changed your mind
You are never gonna regret this

Betelgeuse

We are gonna make such a great team
Give me just one, more

Betelgeuse

It's showtime

Stop it

It's our house now, kid

Whoa

Looks like we're not invisible anymore

Overall Meaning

Caruso's song "One More Day" appears to be a humorous reference to a famous scene from the 1988 movie "Beetlejuice". In the scene, the character Delia Deetz is possessed by Betelgeuse (the character played by Michael Keaton) and starts singing the first verse of "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" while being chased around by ghosts. The lyrics of the song, as used in the movie, are scattered throughout the scene, and are meant to convey the chaotic and absurd nature of the scene. The scene ends with the appearance of the character Lydia Deetz, who puts a stop to Delia's singing and summons Betelgeuse to help her deal with the ghosts haunting her family's house.

The lyrics of the song in the context of the scene seem to serve as a metaphor for the chaos and confusion that is going on around the characters. They are interrupted and interspersed with dialogue and actions, reflecting the way that the characters are being pursued by ghosts and trying to get away. The lyrics, while repeating the same basic phrases over and over again, also contain references to rum, bananas, and tarantulas, which add to the sense of madness and unpredictability of the scene. Ultimately, the scene is resolved when the character Lydia summons Betelgeuse to help her, suggesting that there is a solution to the chaos and confusion if the characters are willing to seek it out.

I only started watching NYPD Blue
after Caruso had left the show.
A few years later I was able to watch
the episodes in which the John Kelly
character appeared. I think the empathy
and wisdom of that character as-
portrayed by David Caruso set the table
for the fine ensemble acting that was
to follow with Franz, Smits and many
others. I enjoyed CSI in its first years,
but by the time it got to its Miami
version it was for me unwatchable.
The character, Horatio, that Caruso
played was like a Godfather type and
was laughably bad.

In spite of what the naysayers say about his career decision here, you can't argue that he went out at the top of his game, and his acting was never less than compelling. He was vital to putting this show on the map. I would say that's a pretty good legacy. Jimmy Smits was good too, as his replacement. He was building on Caruso's foundation. Sometimes things have a way of working out in the long run.

Well I honestly think the Kelly storyline had played itself out to the end no matter what Caruso wanted to do. There really wasn't anywhere else to go with the character -- the first half of the first season is some of the best network tv ever made, but by the end of the season Kelly was starting to get a little corny. It was like they were burning the candle at both ends with him, and Caruso's intensity wasn't like Franz's intensity. It took itself too seriously and had a shelf life. I know Bochco has said before that if he had to do it all over again that he'd still cast Caruso but do sorta what they did was have him just be a one season character with an enclosed storyline and have his story end basically the way it did just without all the behind the scenes drama. I mean you look back at those first couple of episodes and it's like there's no other way it could have ended for Kelly other than how it did.

@Mark Lutz I think he even admitted that, when they had that 2011 reunion with all the guys who played the lead roles. I don't think he understood the full impact the show had on the audience. There was nothing on TV like it.

I actually think he left before he should have. I believe his ego was alot bigger than his grip on reality. He went right into starring roles and he didn't have the draw.

Caruso couldn't carry Jimmy Smits' jock strap.

Always wished Caruso did more seasons of NYPD blue... he was amazing as John Kelly! Never understood the "leaving to go do movies". The movie business is so risky and few actors ever successfully made the jump from TV to film. After all that, he winds up right back on TV (CSI Miami), playing a shadow of the John Kelly character.

Well it's hard to remember that back then tv really was seen as a lesser art for actors. That's what that whole generation thought; just look at Clooney. You could often make more money in the aggregate in tv, but it just wasn't as glamorous and people got into screen acting back then (and still do) dreaming of being "movie" stars. That was their view of the industry, and this was before "prestige" tv (which NYPD Blue helped create). Actors always think they're awesome; they have to, it's too hard of a business with too much rejection. Caruso took his shot but the problem was that he never really understood what kind of actor he was (more a character actor, which can work as a lead on tv) but more importantly he bit the hand that fed -- you can't do that kind of thing in that business. It's all about networking and producers and writers and the media liking you. On top of that, with the narcissism of actors, it usually takes experiencing being rejected and blacklisted to realize how good you had it, hence why he and many others eventually mended fences and came back to tv and were content. I mean just look at Clooney, for whom Caruso very much served as an example of what NOT to do; Clooney served out his contract with ER without being a pain in the ass and was always publicly grateful and was open to coming back for a few appearances. That bought a lot of good will that has sustained him over the last 25 years of being a star who really wasn't actually a movie star.

@No first name. No last name. Oh yes, I've heard stories. Because of his new fame, he felt that TV was beneath him and really wanted to be a "film star". I think he said something out loud like "who writes this sh@t?" when he was reading an NYPD Blue script. That got back to the writers and show creator and was the beginning of the end. They were definitely glad to see him go :)

No first name. No last name.

Caruso wasn’t getting along on the set with anyone. He was causing a lot of strife so they wrote him out.

@ThomasFromTN your secretly Caruso huh🤨
