Alien
Cary Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Breaking your heart was never my intention
Playing with parts too fragile in the ending

We have become alien, we have become alien
Give me a song that weighs a ton
We have become alien

Stop and we start, asking all the questions
Raising alarm, a symptom of the tension
Though we're unarmed, we fumble through the trenches
Taking apart all that we invented

We have become alien
We have become alien
Give me a song that weighs a ton
We have become alien

We played the part til comfort's gone
Now the only language is loss
The language of loss

We have become alien
We have become alien

Give me a song that weighs a ton
We have become alien

Overall Meaning

In "Alien," Cary Brothers sings about a relationship that has deteriorated beyond repair. He acknowledges that he never intended to break his partner's heart and that he played with parts that were too fragile. The couple has become alien to each other, unable to communicate or understand each other's needs. They stop and start conversations, asking questions and causing tension. They are fumbling through the trenches of their relationship, taking apart everything they have built.

In the chorus, Brothers repeats the phrase "We have become alien" as a way to acknowledge the divide that has formed between them. He pleads for a song that "weighs a ton," perhaps something that can bridge the gap between them, but it seems as though their relationship has reached a point of no return. In the bridge, Brothers sings that they played their part until comfort was gone, and now the only language they speak is the language of loss.

Overall, "Alien" is a poignant song about a relationship that has deteriorated beyond repair. The lyrics paint a picture of two people who are unable to bridge the gap between them, even though they are trying their best. Brothers' use of metaphors and poetic language adds depth and complexity to the song and makes it a poignant and emotional piece of music.

They have the answers to the star in the eye.
They see heart in worldly touchings.
