Fallin'
Cary Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I thought I was livin' life in the right lane
but honest to a fault was not enough
I owe you an explanation
for how I got myself into this rut

scared the ceiling's too low, can't stand up and run
earthquake save me and bring this building to dust
baby can't you see me fallin, fallin
going down despite your love
baby can't you see me fallin, fallin
sold my soul and time is up

beat, broke, tired before you met me
suffered through the perils of my youth
he offered me a choice, couldn't say no
now he'll come collect upon the truth

my heart ain't part of the deal, and love is the proof
so the only thing I have left, babe, I give to you

baby can't you see me fallin, fallin
going down despite your love
baby can't you see me fallin, fallin
sold my soul and time is up

I've come to ask you…
is this the way you want to go?
cut and run now?
or will you hold out?
I need the answer
can't read the writing on the wall
is this the last call
of all I fought for?

baby can't you see me fallin, fallin
going down despite your love

baby can't you see me fallin, fallin
sold my soul and time is up

Overall Meaning

The song "Fallin'" by Cary Brothers is a sad and emotional ballad about someone who feels they have made mistakes in their life that have led to their downfall. The first verse begins with the singer recalling how they thought they were living their life correctly, but they soon realized that their honesty was not enough. They feel they owe an explanation for how they ended up in so much trouble. The second line of the verse tells us that the singer is scared that the ceiling is too low, and they can't stand up and run. They are stuck in a situation that they are unable to escape from. In the chorus, the singer begs their love interest to see them fall and to understand that they're falling despite their love. They have sold their soul, and time is up.

In the second verse, the singer tells us that they were already beaten, broke, and tired before they met their love interest. They had suffered through the perils of youth, and when an opportunity was offered to them, they couldn't say no. The singer had warned their love interest of this, and now they are coming to collect upon the truth. They desperately want their love interest to understand that their heart is not part of the deal, and they give the remaining love they have to them. The chorus is sung again with the same desperation and pain.

At the end of the song, the singer comes to their love interest to ask if this is how they want to go, whether they want to cut and run, or hold out. They need an answer because they can't read the writing on the wall, and they don't want this to be the last call of all they have fought for. The song ends with the last chorus, and you can hear the pain in the singer's voice as they know that they are about to lose everything.
