Over and Out

That's what you said, your words of weight
And what's this temple that you started
Your blessings gained by our mistakes
Over and out
I gave my soul for you
Taking it back, I can't pay for faith with dues
Your house is a wreck, an open door for fools
New messiah, you can't save my soul
You're playing God, is it your ego?
Or just a way with others' pain?
That caring smile becoming see-through
I watch you fake and entertain
How dare you divide us with fear through grace?
What gives you the right to decide my fate?
Over and out
I gave my soul for you
Taking it back, I can't pay for faith with dues
Your house is a wreck, an open door for fools
New messiah, you can't save my soul
I'll pray for you as I walk away
I've claimed my soul
The lyrics of Cary Brothers's "Over and Out" paint the picture of a disillusioned believer who has given everything to a religious leader, only to realize that this leader may be less of a divine figure and more of a power-hungry egotist. The first verse describes the promises made by this leader, who speaks with gravitas and convinces the singer to devote themselves fully to their teachings. However, as time passes, the singer begins to see through the facade, watching as the leader's "caring smile" becomes "see-through" and the true nature of their intentions is revealed. The chorus marks the singer's break from this leader, as they recognize that their devotion has been misplaced and they must reclaim their own soul and beliefs.
The second verse takes a more accusatory tone, as the singer questions the leader's use of fear and division to manipulate their followers. The line "What gives you the right to decide my fate?" speaks to the way that the leader's power has overshadowed the singer's agency and autonomy. The bridge is a moment of both compassion and finality, as the singer acknowledges that they still care for this person but know that they must walk away for the sake of their own spiritual well-being.
Overall, "Over and Out" is a powerful exploration of the dangers of blind devotion and the importance of recognizing when a leader's words may not match their actions. It encourages the listener to consider their own beliefs and the power dynamics at play within their community.
