Under Control
Cary Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lost a night again
This path is taking its toll
All your worry spent
In broken glass on the floor

Oh, it's just a bottle that holds
An empty soul
What was the sign?
When did you know?
I promise this time
To keep it under control
Under control, under control, under control, keep it under control

The room was spinning round
You shuffled me to the door
Heard you tell your friends, all of them
The lies you told them before

Oh, you're not a victim of hope
I alone brought you this low

What was the sign?
When did you know?
Give me the time
I'll give you control
Under control, under control, keep it under control

I've nothing to defend
And you have suffered enough
Help me make amends
Under control
Under control, under control, keep it under control

Keep it under control, keep it under control
Keep it under control, keep it under control

Overall Meaning

The song "Under Control" by Cary Brothers is a raw and vulnerable reflection on the effects of addiction on a relationship. The opening lines, "Lost a night again, this path is taking its toll," suggest that the singer is struggling with the consequences of their substance abuse. The broken glass on the floor serves as a metaphor for the shattered state of their life and relationship, as all their worry is spent on the addiction.

The chorus repeats the line "What was the sign? When did you know?" emphasizing the confusion and distress of the situation. The singer promises to keep it under control, recognizing that they have lost control in the past. However, the lines "you shuffled me to the door, heard you tell your friends, all of them the lies you told them before" hint at the harm caused to their loved ones, with the lies and attempts to hide the problem from others.

The concluding lines offer a sense of hope for redemption and reconciliation, with the singer asking for help to make amends and keep the addiction "Under control." Overall, the song is a poignant reminder of the damaging effects of addiction on both the individual and their relationships.

ever since this song was uploaded 13 days ago, it's come up on my recommendations at least three times a day. and every single time i see this video suggested to me, i can't help but watch it. I've known and loved it for over a decade but no matter how many times I hear it, I always want to hear it again. So many Cary Brothers songs have been featured in movies and TV shows and I think it's crazy that this one hasn't because it's so fucking good. This better have over 10,000 views a year from now because it truly needs to be heard. If this were just a simple acoustic song, it would already be a 10/10. But the arrangements, especially on the chorus, somehow elevate it to a level above that. I love every second of it.

His music has served as the soundtrack of many difficult times of my life, which makes me all the more happy when one of his songs comes up on my 20th rewatch of Scrubs. Some songs never get old. This is one of them. So are just about every song from Who You Are and Under Control.
