Who You Are
Cary Brothers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You're terrified of the light show
One more pill and you won't feel a thing
'Cause you push me off in pieces
So you never feel the blame
Of a broken heart and all that it contains
But you don't know who you are
You try to, but you can't move
As the windows crash around you
No one there to carry you away
And the photographs are falling
And they're shaking to the core
YOu never did tread lightly
You want more
And you don't know who you are
But you don't know who you are
Come outside, take my hand
All the things you'll understand
And you will know
When you let go
I adore you
The lyrics of Cary Brothers's song "Who You Are" portray a complicated and emotional relationship between two people. The first verse depicts a person who is overwhelmed by the chaos and confusion around them. They use drugs to try and escape their problems, and they to push others away to avoid dealing with the pain of a broken heart. The second verse describes a scene in which the person is trapped and unable to move, as everything around them falls apart. The person's past mistakes are catching up to them, and they realize that they want more, but they don't know who they are or how to find what they're looking for.
The chorus repeats the line "you don't know who you are," emphasizing the theme of identity and self-discovery. The bridge offers hope for the person's future, encouraging them to take the singer's hand and step outside to face their problems head-on. The singer promises that the person will understand everything and know who they are if they let go of their self-destructive habits and confront their fears. The final line, "I adore you," suggests that the singer cares deeply for the person and believes in their ability to change.
