Tower
Cary Pierce Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In this city I am alone,
But I know that she is here somewhere,
Statues of light;
A sea of yellow, black, and green
I watch from the tower

Doorman's awake,
Millions below,
But no-ones been here for days
Giants block out the sun
So little light for everyone
I watch from the tower

I'm ready to love,
I'm ready to breathe,
I'm ready to give more than I receive,
I've lived long enough
So long as I am,
Though nothings deserved,
I feel it again

Old man on the other side of town,
Lady doctor two doors down,
Woman crying in the park,
Sits alone in the dark
Crying from the tower

I'm ready to love,
I'm ready to breathe,
I'm ready to give more than I receive,
I've lived long enough
But long as I am,
Though nothings deserved,
I feel it again

I'm ready to love,
I'm ready to breathe,
I'm ready to give more than I receive,
I've lived long enough
But long as I am,
Though nothings deserved,
I feel it again

I'm ready to love,
I'm ready to breathe,
I'm ready to give more than I receive,
I've lived long enough
But long as I am,
Though nothings deserved,
I feel it again

I'm ready to love,
I'm ready to breathe,
I'm ready to give more than I receive,
I've lived long enough
But long as I am,
Though nothings deserved,
I feel it again

In this city I am alone,
But I know that she is here somewhere,
Statues of light;

A sea of yellow, black, and green
I watch from the tower

Overall Meaning

The song “Tower” by Cary Pierce is a beautiful, introspective ballad that speaks to the loneliness and isolation that come with living in a big city. The singer ponders the sea of people and the lights that surround him from the top of a tower, feeling disconnected and alone in the midst of the chaos. The lyrics express sadness and yearning for human connection, as the singer observes the people below, pointing out the old man, the lady doctor, and the woman crying in the park.

The singer is ready to love and give more than he receives, hoping for a meaningful relationship and understanding that it might not happen. Throughout the song, the tower which the singer is overlooking the city from is symbolic of the disconnect he feels from the world below. Despite his loneliness, he still feels hope and a sense of renewal as the song resolves, repeating the chorus lines “I'm ready to love, I'm ready to breathe... Though nothings deserved, I feel it again.”

Overall, the “Tower” is a heartfelt and hopeful song about the human capacity for connection and finding meaning in our lives, even in the midst of loneliness.

on Speed

I think this is about wanting to break up with someone, justifying it by explaining that you believe in being pretty selfless but the person you're with doesn't seem to share that belief, and then making excuses for not following through with the breakup. Namely that he's too slow to speak, so he needs more speed to time it correctly. But part of him doesn't want to do it. Wondering how much longer it will take to swing the axe on the relationship.
