Sacrifice
Casey Lee Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Close your eyes now, time for dreams.
Death is never what it seems.
Did the things you thought you should,
All the things they said were good.

All your faith in ancient ways,
Leaves you trapped inside a maze.
Take the lives of those you need,
Sow the death and reap the seed.
Reap the seed.

Born an angel, heaven sent.
Falls from grace are never elegant.
Stars will drop out of the sky,
The moon will sadly watch the roses die.

In vain,
Lost, no gain,
But you're not taking me.

You can't have my life,
I'm not your sacrifice.
You can try, but I'm free,
And you won't conquer me.

I won't crawl,
Most of all,
I won't fall,
For you.

Show them gods and deities,
Blind and kepp the people on their knees.
Pierce the sky, escape your fate.
The more you try the more you'll just breed hate,

And lies.
Truth will rise,
Revealed by mirrored eyes.

What if all the plans you made,
Were not worth the price they paid?
Even with the lives you stold,
Still no closet to your...
Goal.

You can't have my life.
I'm not your sacrifice.
You can try, but I'm free,
And you won't conquer me.

I won't crawl,
Most of all,

I won't fall,
For you.

Overall Meaning

The song "Sacrifice" by Casey Lee Williams is a powerful anthem about the struggle between good and evil, and the importance of standing up for oneself in the face of darkness. The lyrics use vivid imagery and metaphor to tell the story of someone who has been trapped in a maze of ancient beliefs and traditions, and who must fight to break free from those chains in order to live a life of their own choosing.

The song begins with a call to "close your eyes" and enter into the world of dreams, where death is not what it seems. This sets the stage for a journey of self-discovery and transformation, as the singer must confront the beliefs and values that they have been taught and decide whether they truly align with who they are as an individual. The verses also touch on themes of sacrifice and the price of ambition, as the singer wonders whether the plans they have made are "worth the price they paid" and whether the lives they have taken have brought them closer to their ultimate goal.

The chorus is a defiant declaration of independence, as the singer asserts that they will not be a pawn in someone else's game. They refuse to be a sacrifice, and will not allow anyone to conquer them. The bridge of the song takes a critical look at the ways in which religion and ideology can be used to manipulate and control people, as the singer warns against the dangers of blindly following gods and deities that serve to keep people docile and obedient. The song ends with a powerful affirmation of the singer's strength and resilience in the face of adversity, as they vow not to crawl, fall or succumb to the pressures of the world around them.

Spoilers for volume 8!

So I know that the hound being summer is a controversial theory but the first part of this song makes me wonder....

“Death is never what it seems”
“Born an angel, Heaven sent. Falls from Grace are never elegant”

Then they throw in: “the moon will sadly watch the roses die”

It sounds like some heavy foreshadowing that summer has fallen from grace in her “death”.

@nuvaboy
This passage from 2:42 to the word "Goal".

To me it has something to do with Cinder.
"All the lives you stole"- Reference to the fall of Beacon and the thousands that died then due to her actions.
"Still no closer to your goal"- Well...as the volumes go, she still isn't making that much progress.
Her plans have been thwarted quite a few times by now...

Or wait...I think I have an even better idea..

What if...
The leitmotif of this song and cinder's song in V8 are so similar is because...
Sacrifice is also about not surrendering yourself to someone else's will. Not being their sacrifice on their plans so to speak.
Well...
Cinder, given what we've recently seen with Salem mirroring her abusive stepmom, might feel that way about Salem.

Other Grimm

I still think this song is from Raven's point of view towards Ozpin. It was part of the Volume 2 soundtrack, which was the first time we saw Raven.

She blames Ozpin for sacrificing people in his war against Salem, such as Summer, and still not getting the job done ('The moon will sadly watch the roses die in vain, lost, no gain'; 'What if all the plans you made were not worth the price they paid, even with the lives you stole, still no closer to your goal').

She knows about the relics, which makes me think Ozpin tried to recruit her - and while she may have joined him for a while, she left after deciding Ozpin couldn't win (which she alludes to in 'Family'). She refuses to just be another pawn in Ozpin's losing game ('You can't have my life, I'm not your sacrifice'; 'Most of all, I won't fall for you').

Admittedly, we know very little about Raven as a character, but I feel like this song fits pretty well with what we do know, and helps to fill in some of the unknowns (just like From Shadows hinted at Blake's faunus heritage long before it was revealed).

Just my thoughts.

Uh there's an error with the lyrics here

It's supposed to be "sow the death and reap the seed

reap THE-

SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED"

tyvm

Nah though, really, that's one of my absolutely favorite moments from any song in the overall RWBY soundtrack. it's fucking epic.

At some point, you’ll have to admit that you are causing a lot of those meanings.

Shadow Spector

It’s definitely Raven talking to Ozpin about how Summer died and that she won’t be next.
