Nobody
Cash Johnny Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When life seems full of clouds and rain
And I'm full of nothin' but pain
Who soothes my thumpin', bumpin' brain?
Nobody

When winter-time comes with its snow and sleet
And me with hunger and cold feet
Who says, "Here's two bits, go and eat?"
Nobody

Oh, well I ain't never done nothin' to nobody
I ain't never got nothin' from from nobody, no time
And until I get somethin' from somebody, sometime
I don't intend to do nothin' for nobody, no time

When summer-time comes all warm and clear
And my friends see me drawin' near
Who says, "Come on in, and have a beer?"
Nobody

Well, one time when things was lookin' bright
I started to whittle it on a stick one night
Who said, "Hey! That's dynamite!"
Nobody

I ain't ever done nothin' to nobody
I ain't ever got nothin' from nobody, no time
And until I get somethin' from somebody, sometime
I don't intend to do nothin' for nobody, no time

I ain't ever done nothin' to nobody
I ain't ever got nothin' from nobody, no time

And until I get somethin' from somebody, sometime
I don't intend to do nothin' for nobody, no time

Overall Meaning

The song "Nobody" by Cash Johnny explores the idea of loneliness and the feeling of not having anyone to turn to. The lyrics express the singer's feelings of pain, hunger, and cold, with no one to soothe, pity or offer help. The song touches on the idea of moral obligation and the question of whether we owe anything to anyone. The line "Oh, well I ain't never done nothin' to nobody, I ain't never got nothin' from nobody, no time" suggests that the singer may feel disconnected from society and people in general. This feeling of isolation is highlighted by the repetition of the phrase "nobody" throughout the song.

The refrain "And until I get somethin' from somebody, sometime, I don't intend to do nothin' for nobody, no time" is a powerful statement that conveys the singer's sense of despair and disillusionment. It suggests that the singer has given up on the idea of reciprocity and that he is unwilling to help others until someone helps him. The song is a powerful commentary on the human condition and the complexities of social relationships. It suggests that loneliness and isolation are universal experiences that we all share, and that the search for connection and meaning is a fundamental aspect of the human experience.

I'm suprised I haven't found this one sooner. Good one johnny. Its hurts to say it but ive been rejected by my own family. All because I'm depressed and autistic. I guess I'm just so weird I bring everyone else down with me.

Life is such a lonely ride

Michael Purvis

It can be desperately lonely, in a way that can crush and destroy people. Obviously, not everyone makes it. But I think the suffering has a purpose, in the sense that if we let ourselves be cooked, or crushed, there's something that can be revealed from very deep inside, that can't ever be defeated. Some people call that God. But it has to be something like that, because it's the infinite place from which all the love and all the beauty and all the truth come.

We are being tenderized, hit with hammers. The reason is to awaken in us the nostalgia for where we came from. This infinite unquenchable longing for God is the cure for all the pain... But to get to it, each of us has to open our wounds all the way. And no one wants to do that. That's what I take to be the meaning of this song.
